ANDOVER, Mass.—Pulitzer Prize-winning author David Halberstam is coming to the alma mater of New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick to talk a little football. He’ll also talk about history, Iraq, politics and sports in general before signing copies of his new book, The Education of a Coach.
Halberstam will speak in the Cochran Chapel on the Phillips Academy campus on Friday, Nov. 4, 2005 at 7:30 p.m. He will be joined onstage by Ernie Adams, the Patriots’ director of operations, who, like Belichick, is also a PA alumnus. Following his talk, Halberstam will take questions from the audience and sign copies of his book.
The event is free and open to the public.
Copies of Halberstam’s book will be available for purchase starting at 6:30 p.m. in the chapel lobby. The book can also be purchased online. All proceeds from books purchased through Phillips Academy will be donated to the school’s Disaster Relief Fund.
Considered to be one of the country’s most distinguished social and political commentators, Halberstam is a journalist and prolific author who has written 20 books, 14 of which have been bestsellers. In 1964, at the age of 30, Halberstam won a Pulitzer Prize for his accounts of the Vietnam War while working as a reporter for The New York Times.
A man of many interests, his books have tackled diverse topics, including the Vietnam War, the civil rights struggle, John F. Kennedy’s presidency, the U.S.’s post-Cold War foreign policy, and the challenge the American automobile industry faces from Japan. In the area of sports, among other topics, he has written about Michael Jordan and the 1949 pennant race between the Red Sox and the Yankees. One of his most recent bestsellers was Firehouse, the story of a New York firehouse that lost 12 men during the terrorist attacks of 9/11.
In his newest book, Halberstam uses his analytical skills and keen story-telling abilities to take readers into the mind of Bill Belichick, a man who many have come to describe as one the most formidable and highly intelligent coaches in football history. He examines the influences in his life that molded and shaped him as well as the unique characteristics that have taken him to the pinnacle of his profession.
The Education of a Coach is published by Hyperion of New York City. It is scheduled to be released to bookstores on Nov. 1, 2005.
