ANDOVER, Mass.—Simone Salvo, a Phillips Academy upper, has won a 2006 Golden Light Award from the Maine Photographic Workshops. Salvo, a talented photographer, earned the top spot in the workshops’ High School Student Portfolio Competition.
Founded in 1973 as a summer conservatory for photographers and filmmakers, the Maine Photographic Workshops has since grown to become a year-round college and learning center for filmmakers, photographers, actors, writers, digital artists, and creative professionals. Selected by a panel of judges, winners of the Golden Light Awards are chosen on the basis of artistic vision and craft.
A self-taught photographer, Salvo plans to attend the Maine Photographic Workshops next year. She did not do so this past summer; instead, she was half a world away. “I was in Thailand working on a photography project funded by the generosity of Andover through the Martin Luther King Jr. Award and a Brace Center grant,” explains Salvo.
“When I learned of the Golden Light Award competition, I was intimidated by its prestige and the numerous photographers who submit their work,” admits Salvo. “I decided to give it a shot and submit a collection of 12 black and white gelatin silver prints. Weeks later, I received a phone call announcing my win, and I could barely speak I was so excited! I am still in shock.”
Salvo’s winning portfolio, titled Tokens, can be viewed at the Golden Light Awards Web site.
This fall, Salvo is taking part in a semester-long program at the Oxbow School of Napa, Calif. This 16-week opportunity, for high school juniors and seniors passionate about art, offers high-level instruction in the visual arts and academic subjects.
“Photography is my passion,” says Salvo. “To be able to see the world through a lens and capture the extraordinary beauty that can sometimes surpass the naked eye is a wonderful creative outlet. With a camera in my hands I feel free, as if the possibilities are limitless.”
