Poet Robert S. Pinsky to Visit PA Campus on April 25

April 10, 2008

ANDOVER — Former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert S. Pinsky will visit the Phillips Academy campus Friday, April 25 at 7 p.m. to share his award-winning poetry, participate in a question and answer session, and sign copies of his books. Sponsored by the Sandra Isham Vreeland Fund and the Phillips Academy English Department, the event will take place in Kemper Auditorium, and is free and open to the public.

Pinsky’s seventh and latest poetry collection is Gulf Music: Poems.  Known for its vividly imagination and elegance, Pinsky’s poetry has been described as “wild with musical energy and possessing ambitious range.” The New York Times Book Review recently praised Pinsky as our last civic poet stating, “Pinsky is our finest living specimen of this sadly rare breed, and the poems of “Gulf Music” are among the best examples we have of poetry’s ability to illuminate not only who we are as humans, but who we are—and can be—as a nation.”

Pinsky is also a celebrated essayist and translator, with his most famous translation being The Inferno of Dante. During his time as Poet Laureate, Pinsky created the Favorite Poem Project and has since become one of the most visible advocates of poetry in the country. Currently a teacher in the graduate writing program at Boston University, Pinsky will give a master class to creative writing students at Andover before his evening reading.
