ANDOVER, Mass.—The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced that 24 Phillips Academy students are among the 16,000 students nationwide to be selected as semifinalists in its 51st annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These students now have the opportunity to compete for 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $33 million, that will be offered next spring.
More than 1.3 million juniors in nearly 21,000 U.S. high schools entered the 2006 National Merit Program by taking the 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Semifinalists represent the highest scoring entrants in each state, with the number of semifinalists in each state being proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. Less than one percent of all U.S. high school seniors are named as semifinalists.
To become a finalist, and thereby earn the opportunity to become one of the 8,200 scholarship winners, the semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout their high school years, be endorsed and recommended by their school’s principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier qualifying test performance.
