May 1, 2008

ANDOVER — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced winners in the 2008 competition for awards in the National Merit, National Achievement, and Corporate-sponsored Merit scholarship categories. Three Andover students were awarded full National Merit Scholarships, worth $2,500 each. They are Jin Won Lee ’08 of Hong Kong; Ryan J. Park ’08 of Skokie, Ill.; and Stephanie J. Schuyler ’08 of North Reading, Mass. They were selected from more than 1.4 million high school students who took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Earlier this year, they were among 19 Andover students named National Merit Scholarship finalists.

The 2008 National Achievement Scholarship competition is limited to Black Americans and involved more than 140,000 students in the first round. Two Andover students have won $2,500 National Achievement Scholarships this year. They are Obinna Igbokwe ’08 of Bronx, N.Y., and Osei R. Wilks ’08 of Brooklyn, N.Y.

Corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarships are awarded to some 1,500 students who meet the sponsors’ criteria as well as those of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. These scholarships may either be one-time awards or renewable through four years of undergraduate study. Three special corporate awards have been won by Andover students: Nayab H. Khan ’08 of Missouri City, Texas, Lisa Lian ’08 of Lyme, Conn., and Katherine Zimmerman ’08 of Andover, Mass.

All winners were chosen on the basis of their accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies by a committee of college admission officers and high school counselors. Students are designated on a state representational basis, in numbers proportionate to each state’s percentage of graduating high school seniors.
