ANDOVER —
The Foundation for Chinese Performing Arts has awarded a gold medal in the 17th Annual All-American Chinese Brush Painting and Calligraphy Competition to Phillips Academy 11th-grader Jennifer Fan, a native of Hong Kong. Fan submitted two paintings—one of a majestic abstract crane framed by a leafy tree, which won the gold, and another of a pensive monkey seated on a tree branch, which was named a silver medal winner.
The foundation, based in Lexington, Mass., honored 59 winners of gold, silver, bronze, and honorable mention awards in multi-aged categories on April 19, 2008. More than 360 entries were received from artists in eight states. Paintings were judged by a team of seven professional Chinese brush painters and calligraphers, art critics, and professors in Chinese history and art from Harvard and Boston University.
Fan, 17, is the founder and moving spirit behind Ink Oasis, a Phillips Academy student club that meets every two weeks to learn about and create Chinese brush paintings. Her ultimate goal is to use the club’s art to raise money to build a medical clinic in Guizhou, China. Paintings completed by students, including some by Fan, will be exhibited and offered for sale at Starbucks on Main Street in Andover this Sunday, April 27. Two weeks ago, Fan exhibited Ink Oasis’s paintings and gave a demonstration at the Memorial Hall Library in Andover. Club members and some of the audience participated in the creation of a painting. The Andover Chinese Chorus and the Xi Yang Yang Music Ensemble performed Chinese music.
