Peter T. Hetzler, MD '72: President of the Alumni Council

Despite his earlier wanderings across the country, Peter Hetzler has not landed far from his roots. A native of Rumson, NJ, he returned to Monmouth County to establish his practice in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Following graduation from Phillips Academy, Hetzler crossed the country to Stanford, returning about half way to earn his MD degree from the University of Michigan.

For his surgery residencies, Hetzler headed to Penn State, completing both his general and plastic and reconstructive surgery training at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. He also served a fellowship in reconstructive microsurgery at York (PA) Hospital and in aesthetic surgery at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital.

Hetzler served as the President of the New Jersey Society of Plastic Surgeons, and is an officer of the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is a member of the national leadership development team of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and serves as chair of the ASPS State Government Affairs Committee.

In addition to service to PA as an admissions representative and on the Alumni Council, Hetzler serves as a trustee of the Rumson Country Day School, of which he is a member of the class of 1968, and of the Oceanic Free Library of Rumson. He is also a trustee of the Riverview Medical Center Foundation and the American Littoral Society, a coastal conservation organization based in Sandy Hook, NJ. At Andover, he has been a generous supporter of the Alumni Council's mentoring program.

Hetzler inherited an Andover tradition: his father, also Peter Hetzler, was a member of the class of 1945 and was also an active volunteer on Andover’s behalf. During his retirement, he became a docent at PA’s Peabody Museum.

Hetzler and his wife, Christine, have two children, Peter ’10, and Stephanie.
