ANDOVER—Phillips Academy reduced its energy consumption by 18.53% and saved $4,407 in the past week, as the Green Cup Challenge ended its second week. The accomplishment was good enough to allow PA to hold onto a fourth place spot in the competition. There are still two weeks remaining in the competition and plenty of time to make a run for the grand prize. To date, the 29 schools competing have prevented approximately 617,622 pounds of CO2 from entering the atmosphere.
To celebrate the competition, this Thursday will be Green Cup Spirit Day. The student who wears the most green and shows the most Green Cup Spirit will win a Ben & Jerry’s surprise. The winner will be determined by Ms. Bogdanovitch and Green Cup Spirit consultants. Students wishing to be considered for the award must come by Ms. B’s office (Gelb 125) during conference period on Thursday (8:50 – 9:15). The winner will be announced at the end of the day on Thursday. Go green this Thursday and bring it home for Big Blue.
Strong Start for PA in First Week of Green Cup Challenge
February 6, 2008
ANDOVER — Thirty independent schools from Pennsylvania to New Hampshire are competing fiercely this month in the annual Green Cup Challenge to see who can reduce electricity use the most by practicing conservation techniques on campus. Monday, the first week’s readings came in, and Phillips Academy is off to a strong start, placing third behind St. George’s School and Miss Porter’s School and with an overall reduction of 18.50 percent from the baseline data. That data was determined by OPP meter readings, which will be taken each of the next three Mondays as well.
Rebecca Bogdanovitch, campus sustainability coordinator, said “While our individual institutional accomplishment is significant, it’s more important to recognize the aggregate efforts of the thirty schools combined. Thirty schools prevented an estimated 290,631 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted in just one week. That’s the real accomplishment. The next step is making sure this behavior is continued beyond the Green Cup Challenge.”
This is the second year PA has participated. Since last year, the number of participating schools has nearly doubled. The Office of Sustainability, the OPP, and the Technology Office have collaborated to set up an energy monitor on the first floor of Gelb Hall. The monitor captures real-time data on Andover’s energy consumption.
All members of the PA community—students, faculty, and staff—are encouraged to participate in the Green Cup Challenge, which, of course, targets a far larger goal: the global mission to reduce energy consumption.
WHAT CAN YOU DO? Start with the five simple ideas on the left. And watch this space for weekly updates through the month. The competition ends on February 25, but the challenge is with us forever.
