New Department Chairs Appointed

Dean of Faculty Temba Maqubela and newly appointed Dean of Studies John Rogers have announced the following academic appointments:
 
Art Department Chair: Shirley Veneema has accepted the appointment of Art Department Chair beginning September 1, 2006 and continuing through August 31, 2012. Since coming to Phillips Academy in 1979, Shirley has served as Instructor in Art, as an adviser and as a house counselor. Since 1988, she has also been working with Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Shirley completed her M.A. from Glassboro State College in New Jersey. She was the recipient of the Frederick W. Beinecke Fund for Teaching in 2004. Please join us in congratulating Shirley as she takes the helm from Elaine Crivelli, who has served us so well as Art department Chair for the last nine years.

Chinese Department Chair: Travis Conley has accepted the appointment of Chinese Department Chair beginning September 1, 2006 and continuing through August 31, 2012. Prior to joining Phillips Academy in 2004 as Instructor in Chinese, Travis was an instructor at the Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington and a Teaching Assistant at the University of Washington. He also was a translation proofreader and conducted research for the University of Washington Business School. Travis received his M.A. in classical Chinese Literature from the University of Washington, Seattle. Please join us in congratulating Travis as he takes over from a very able Peter Merrill.

French Department Chair: Charles Clerc has accepted the appointment of French Department Chair beginning September 1, 2006 and continuing through August 31, 2012. The first time Charles joined the Phillips Academy community was in 1995, when he spent a year here as a visiting instructor from France. Until last year, when he again joined Andover as Instructor in French, he had been Director of Proctor Academy in Aix-en-Provence, France. While he was director, Charles was involved not only in teaching but in all aspects of student life. He received his M.A. and his Ph.D. in French Literature and Civilization from the University of Paris. Please join us in congratulating Charles as he receives the baton from the veteran Lynn Herbst.
