Former U.S. Presidential Envoy to Iraq L. Paul Bremer III to give talk and sign copies of his new book, My Year in Iraq.
February 8, 2006
ANDOVER, Mass.— Ambassador L. Paul Bremer III '59 will be returning to his high school alma mater to share his perspectives on the Iraq War and talk about the fourteen danger-filled months he spent as head of the U.S.-led occupation government in Iraq following the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime. After his talk, Ambassador Bremer will sign copies of his recently released book, My Year in Iraq.
Bremer will speak in the Tang Theatre in George Washington Hall on the Phillips Academy campus on Tuesday, February 14 at 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required.
Copies of Bremer’s book will be available for purchase starting at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby of George Washington. All profits from books purchased through Phillips Academy will be donated to the school’s Disaster Relief Fund, which provides assistance to victims of last year’s Hurricane Katrina and the Pakistan/India earthquake.
Bremer was appointed by President George W. Bush '64 to head the coalition government in Iraq on May 6, 2003, and he remained in that position until the transfer of political power on June 28, 2004. That December, Bush awarded Bremer the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his service in Iraq.
While Bremer has been supportive of Bush’s decision to invade Iraq and complimentary about Bush’s war time leadership, he has also criticized the administration for not deploying enough troops to Iraq and for not containing the violence and looting in the days immediately following the ouster of Hussein.
In his book, Bremer describes the many challenges and frustrations he faced while serving in Iraq, while also providing readers with a behind-the-scenes look at the complex negotiations with emerging Iraqi leaders and the heated sessions between the members of Bush’s own National Security Council.
Prior to his service in Iraq, Bremer had spent twenty-three years working in the U.S. Department of State, where he served as special assistant or executive assistant to six Secretaries of State. In 1983, President Reagan appointed him Ambassador to the Netherlands, a post he held for three years. In 1999, he was appointed as the chairman of the National Commission on Terrorism. In 2002, President Bush appointed him to his Homeland Security Advisory Council. Bremer has also held a number of positions in priviate industry, including that of chairman and CEO of Marsh Crisis Consulting Company.
In addition to being a 1959 graduate of Phillips Academy, Bremer holds a B.A. degree from Yale University, an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration, and a CEP from the Institut D’Etudes Politiques of the University of Paris.
My Year in Iraq is published by Simon & Schuster of New York City. It was released to bookstores in January.
