Cultural Sharing
Growing out of a recognition that it is not an easy task to assemble 110 students for a common academic purpose from three cultural groups, 12 cities and 10 Native American ethnic groups, Cultural Sharing has become a unique time for celebrating the three cultures that comprise our (MS)2 student population—African-American, Latino/a and Native American. Each group prepares an hour-long program to highlight some features of its culture. The programs are almost entirely the work of students, with only minimal faculty oversight.
Students
may present traditional dances, wear authentic costumes, recite
poetry, describe important historical events or sing songs that
celebrate and help to educate others about their culture. Past programs
have included pinatas, roots of African American music and colorful
pieces of Native-American folklore and dance. Following the
presentations, the audience is treated to samples of dishes distinctive
to the three groups. Their preparation is done entirely by students.
Held early in the session, Cultural Sharing gives students and teachers
important insight into the differences and similarities among their
peers and colleagues in (MS)2, as well as a recognition
of the themes that cut across cultural lines and unite us all. Students
within a single group often realize the rich diversity that exists
even within their own culture.
