Students Renovate Houses During Spring Break

Some 40 Phillips Academy students and 10 faculty members participated in the annual Spring Break trip to Johns Island, South Carolina, where they spent a week making repairs to homes of residents of the economically depressed area.  Working in small groups, the PA students and faculty made repairs to roofs and floors and built new decks and handicap ramps.  The work was organized through an outreach organization called Rural Missions.  In their down time, the group engaged in dialogue about the nature of community service and learned about the area’s Gullah culture as they spent time with many of the families that they worked to help.  The trip was led by Phillips faculty member Mike Ebner ’70. This was Phillips Academy's 24th service trip to the area.
