Summer Session 2008 closed out in top form as approximately 700 people filled Cochran Chapel on the morning of August 6. As a bagpiper began to play at 9:00 am and the flags of all 38 countries represented in the student body of this summer paraded down the aisle, the crowd jumped to its feet to herald the end of a great summer and the presence of everyone's flags.
The program began with a speech by Armand Keshani (Washington, DC), who wrote the winning speech from a selection of outstanding speeches submitted by the speech and debate teachers. Director's Awards were then made to the following students: Mary Mucci (Newburyport, MA), "Shirley" Yucheng Liu (Beijing, China), Michael Schoenfield (Nashville, TN), and Vishal Kumar Sinha (Hewlett, NY).
A short speech by Summer Session Director Paul Murphy, in which he emphasized the importance of the students using their experiences this summer to improve others' lives in the spirit of non sibi, was followed by a benediction by Maxine Grogan, the Dean of Summer Session Admission.
