WATT PRIZES:
Awarded on the basis of an examination given in May covering advanced work in secondary school mathematics. Problems drawn from calculus, probability, analytic geometry, advanced geometry, sequences and series, etc. Funded in 1953 by J. Lester Parsons, Class of 1925, and William C. Ridgway, 3rd, Class of 1953, in memory of Frederick Ellsworth Watt, Instructor of Mathematics at Phillips Academy, 1933-1951. Cash prizes ($150-$25) and books.


BAILEY PRIZES:
Awarded on the basis of an examination given in May. Problems drawn from such areas as logarithms, exponents, solution of quadratic and cubic equations, trigonometry, etc. Established in 1946 by Edward Bailey Crichton, Class of 1946, in memory of his grandfather, Edward Bailey, Class of 1878. Open to students in Math 31 through 53. (However, Math 34 and 35 students are advised to take the Convers.) Cash prizes ($125-$15) and books

CONVERS PRIZES:
Awarded on the basis of an examination in geometry given in May. Founded in 1898 by E. B. Convers, Class of 1857, and extended in 1951 by former prize winners. Open to students in Math 21 through 35. Cash prizes ($125-$15) and books to top five participants.


EATON PRIZE:
Awarded to a member of the Junior Class for outstanding proficiency in first-year Algebra. Sustained since 1938 and funded in 1957 by bequest of Thaxter Eaton, Class of 1904, in memory of his father, George T. Eaton, Class of 1873, for fifty years an Instructor in Mathematics at Phillips Academy. Prize: $75 and books.

GALBIATI PRIZES:
Awarded to the top three participants from Phillips Academy on the Annual High School Mathematics Exam (AHSME) given the last week in February. Sustained by friends of Charles Edward Galbiati in fond remembrance of his joy in problem solving and his vigorous leadership in interscholastic mathematical competition. First awarded in 1974 ($50, $30, and $20).

 


JOSEPH AWARD:
Awarded to a Senior for excellence in all areas of Mathematics. First awarded in 1960 by David Joseph of New York City, father of William H. Joseph, 1953, in memory of his father, Bernard Joseph. Prize: a Gold Medal.

McCURDY PRIZES:
Awarded to two Seniors for excellence in Mathematics courses other than the Honors program. First awarded in 1941. Funded by the family of Matthew S. McCurdy, in memory of his connection with Phillips Academy as Instructor in Mathematics, 1873-1921. Prizes: $75, $50 and books.


MAYNARD PRIZES:
Awarded for excellence in Analytic Geometry and Calculus. Established in 1972-1973 by an anonymous donor and by friends in honor of Robert E. Maynard, Instructor in Mathematics, 1931-1974. Prizes: $100, $75, $25 and books.

WINFIELD M. SIDES PRIZE:
Awarded for excellence in Computer Science. Funded in 1966 by Donald A. Raymond Jr., Class of 1932, in memory of Winfield M. Sides, Instructor in Mathematics at Phillips Academy, 1919-1958. First awarded in 1960. Prize: $100.

 


SCOVILLE PRIZE:
Awarded to a student or students for an original paper or project exhibiting creative thinking in the Physical Sciences or Mathematics, preferably outside of assigned course work. First awarded in l959. Funded in 1961 by Anthony Church Scoville, Class of 1958, in memory of his grandfather, Herbert Scoville. Prize: $50.

 


WILLIAM F. GRAHAM PRIZE:
Awarded to a student who has been particularly helpful tutoring fellow students. Recipient(s) determined by The Chair of the Mathematics Department and the Director of Academic Counseling. First awarded in 1989. Funded in 1988 by Gifford Coombs, Class of 1976. Prize: $50.
