New Databases
Find our books through Google and Yahoo! Innovative Interfaces Inc., which provides the Millenium library automation system used by the NOBLE consortium, has teamed up with the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) to integrate the online catalogs of 1,100 library systems, including NOBLE, into OCLC's Open WorldCat database. This database is a Web-accessible union catalog with more than 61 million entries. Since OCLC allows search engines to index WorldCat, the catalogs in the Innovative system can now be accessed through Yahoo! and Google. That means that when NOBLE users use Google or Yahoo and type in a book title or a subject, a "Find in a Library" link will come up in the responses. Clicking the link takes the user to an interface on Open WorldCat's site, which prompts them to enter a zip code; Open WorldCat then shows the closest libraries that are holding the item and provides links to those libraries' online catalogs.
