Library Book Group

Library Book Group on Thursday May 24

The next meeting of the library's book group will be on Thursday May 24th at 12.00p.m. in the Blue Room on the 2nd floor of Commons. We will be discussing Jeannette Walls' Glass Castle. According to The Spectator reviewer, Walls' memoir "is full of astonishing episodes, but the book is a success beyond its ability to shock. Jeannette Walls ... has managed to balance her account with great precision: as she and her siblings did, we must both love and hate her parents." Copies of the book will be available in the library at the circulation desk or you may request a copy from one of our consortium libraries. If you have any questions about the book group, please contact Dave Hegarty by e-mail dhegarty@andover.edu or call ext. 4237

New Databases

American History Online from Facts on File

American History Online "spans more than 500 years of political, military, social, and cultural history, highlighting the important people and events of the American experience and includes sections on biographies, primary sources, timelines, an image gallery and the Facts on File Learning Centers.”

Find our books through Google and Yahoo!

Innovative Interfaces Inc., which provides the Millenium library automation system used by the NOBLE consortium, has teamed up with the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) to integrate the online catalogs of 1,100 library systems, including NOBLE, into OCLC's Open WorldCat database. This database is a Web-accessible union catalog with more than 61 million entries. Since OCLC allows search engines to index WorldCat, the catalogs in the Innovative system can now be accessed through Yahoo! and Google.

That means that when NOBLE users use Google or Yahoo and type in a book title or a subject, a "Find in a Library" link will come up in the responses. Clicking the link takes the user to an interface on Open WorldCat's site, which prompts them to enter a zip code; Open WorldCat then shows the closest libraries that are holding the item and provides links to those libraries' online catalogs.
