  Poetry

  • The Poetry and Literature Center of the Library of Congress
A celebration of poetry and the poet laureates rather than a huge digital archive. There is some audio, plus a link to the excellent Bily Collins' project Poetry 180
  • Poetry and Song
Using the poetry of Bill Payne, this site demonstrates how poetry is turned into song and allows the visitor to write lyrics and songs.
  • Poetry on the Peaks
In recognition of the International Year of the Mountains, Dialogue Through Poetry is organizing mountain top readings. You can visit the mountains and read the poems.
  • Poet's Corner
A collection of full text poems, written between the 16th century and 1925. While this site will not replace a good anthology, it does offer a broad spectrum of poets and poetical styles for browsing.
  • The Voice of the Shuttle
Web page for humanities research from UCSB. One of the best places to start poetry research on the web.

 Quotations

  • Bartlett's Quotations at bartleby.com
Same as print version of Bartlett's Familiar Quotations, 10th ed. (1919) but the 11,000 entries are searchable by keyword.
  • The Quotations Page
In addition to the searchable database, there are Quotations of the Day, featured authors and subjects and discussion forums.

 Classics, Mythology & Folklore

  • Argos Limited Area Search Engine
Searches only scholarly sites about the Ancient World. Links to other helpful Internet locations. Try TOCS-IN, a project which "archives the tables of contents of over 150 journals of interest to classicists."
  • Bulfinch's Mythology
Full text selection from "Bulfinch's Mythology." Text is being added on a continual basis and is searchable. If you are looking for the full version of this work, try Ref 292 B87m, in the Garver Room.
  • Diotima: Women and Gender in the Ancient World
This densely packed site offers translated Greek, Latin, Egyptian and Coptic primary source documents. Numerous links to other scholarly sites, a search engine, and course materials are included.
  • Electronic Beowulf
The Beowulf manuscript at the British Library in all its glory, including long hidden changes revealed by fiber optic backlighting. Due to frames, select "Digital Library", then "Beowulf".
  • Encyclopedia Mythica
Online encyclopedia of mythology, folklore and legend contains over 5000 entries. Search engine provides access to specific topics, also contains a browse list, a "what's new" category, illustrations and graphics.
  • Folklore and Mythology Electronic Texts
While not as extensive as "Bulfinch's Mythology" (see above), this site contains extensive and diverse full text folk tales and myths. The site lacks overall organization, but its coverage makes up for this flaw. (It utilizes the Aarne-Thompson tale types for some identification.)
    Geoffrey Chaucer
An extensive scholarly site from Harvard University, there is much here on the life of the middle ages as well as information on Chaucer and his works.
  • Internet Classics Archive
Almost 400 full text Greek and Roman works, with searchable text and links to reader discussion.
  • Mything Links
From Pacifica Graduate Institute, this site is "An Annotated & Illustrated Collection of Worldwide Links to Mythologies, Fairy Tales & Folklore, Sacred Arts & Traditions

An "evolving digital library on Ancient Greece and Rome." Some full text documents.
  • Project Gutenberg
Contains more than 10,000 copyright-free texts and is adding more all the time.
  • The University of Virginia Electronic Text Library
Thousands of texts in English, as well as some in German, French, Japanese and Latin, along with background information.
