  • The American Library Association
    Look under Divisions for useful information..
  • Ask ERIC
    The Educational Resources Information Center, begun at the U.S. Department of Education, provides information and answers on a broad range of education-related issues.
  • Current Cites
    An annotated bibliography of articles, books, and digital documents on information technology plus a small number of full-text articles.
  • Libraries and Library Science
    About.com offers up-to-date information on the school library world and library science. A useful site despite the annoying advertising.
  • Librarian's Yellow Pages on the Web
    "Easy-to-use buyer's guide created by librarians for librarians." The search engine allows keyword or vendor searching.
  • LISNews
    Current topics and news of the library and information science world.
  • LITA Annual Top Technology Trends for Libraries
    ALA's Library and Information Technology Association focuses on important library trends to watch.
  • Massachusetts School Library Media Association
    "dedicated to the improvement of teaching and learning through the integration of school library media programs, resources, and technologies into the total educational process."
  • NMRLS
    Northeast Massachusetts Regional Library System provides databases free of charge to public and school libraries and holds training classes for librarians in the region.
  • Publist
    Currently under revision. A free searchable directory of information about more than 150,000 publications and 8000 newspapers world wide. Information comes from such sources as Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory. Browse periodicals by subject. Document delivery available.
  • Researching Librarian
    Provides links to professional print and electronic information on library and information science.
  • Resources from GaleGroup
    Free resources on writing research papers and documenting resources.
  • Web4Lib
    A listserv for librarians who maintain web sites. Archives of topics are easy to search.

  • INFOMINE
    The University of California at Riverside has gathered and annotated over 20,000 scholarly web resources in a very easy to use interface. The search engine automatically extends words. For an exact search term, put the term in quotation marks.
  • Internet Public Library
    The School of Information at the University of Michigan maintains this comprehensive site, which includes Teen and Youth links.
  • Librarian's Index to the Internet
    From the University of California at Berkeley, this complete subject listing is very user-friendly, and links to a helpful search engine page.
  • Librarians' Resource Center
    Special Libraries Association web links arranged in three categories--public services, professional development and technical resources.
  • Martindale's The Reference Desk
    Updated almost daily, an extremely well organized and categorized site featuring extensive and high quality links to (almost) all fields. Scroll down the page for the links, and be prepared to increase the font size on your browser to read the yellow print against the bright blue background.
  • New York Times Navigator
    The selected net resources page of the New York Times for the newsroom, this page is supposed to change frequently. Very comprehensive links not limited to the news. There are three specialized navigators for students in grades 3-12, teachers and parents.
  • Open Directory Project
    Subject headings selected by editors, a directory similar to Yahoo.
  • RefDesk.com
    Calling itself the "single best source for facts on the net," RefDesk.com is a great site for the intellectually curious. Professionals will find it too busy for a first stop.
  • Scout Report
    Published every Friday on the web (available via e-mail as well), it offers a convenient and quick way to stay informed of new and informative Internet sites. Sites are evaluated by professional librarians who select, research, and annotate each resource.
  • Teen Librarian
    A nice newsy site that includes chats and message boards, but no information about who is responsible for it.

  • OWHL Search Engine Help
    A guide page for using search engines, and help understanding the difference between a database, search engine and gateway site.
  • Search Engine Watch
    Not a search engine itself, but rather "watches" and reports on the evolution of search engines, reviews them, offers insights, how they are indexed, and other information that is not readily available anywhere else.
  • Tool Kit for the Expert Web Searcher
    Pat Ensor maintains this page for ALA's Library and Information Technology Association, LITA. Contains much information on searching techniques and available search engines.
