    Links to all Federal offices, state and local links, a subject directory and a fast search engine make this a good first stop for current information and to send questions or comments.
  • GPO Access
    United States Government Printing Office (GPO) official site contains current budget, U.S. Code, Congressional Bills, Congressional Record, Federal Register, and Public Laws and more--all searchable by keyword.
  • Thomas Legislative Information
    From the Library of Congress' Thomas system, this site includes weekly updates of Congressional floor activity, text of bills beginning in 1993, historical documents and links to state and local government.
  • White House
    President Bush (PA'64) has put together an accessible site full of information and use of multimedia, including audio, photo essays and a BarneyCam. There is a good deal of archival information here on presidential policy.
  • State and Local Government on the Net
    Direct links to state, regional, federal and national information.

    Defunct government organizations are represented in this archive from the University of North Texas and the Government Printing Office, either in the form of web pages or documents.

    This site works well for browsing--you can click on the map or choose a category. Not all towns or counties are represented. The interface is clean and free of advertising.
  • The Great Debate and Beyond: the history of televised presidential debates
    This exhibition from The Museum of Broadcast Communication contains videos of all the presidential debates.
  • Sustainable Communities Network
    A non governmental organization focusing on grass root efforts to improve local communites.
  • The Urban Institute
    A nonpartisan policy research organization specializing in urban affairs, very broadly defined. Includes issues of budget, social security, minorities, and students.

  • travel.state.gov, U.S. Department of State
    Bureau of Consular Affairs, U.S. Department of State maintains this official website which contains up-to-date country information for travellers.
  • Country Studies
    The Country Studies and Area Handbook Program produced by the Library of Congress Research Division contains the full text of over 100 volumes (some are also in the library's circulating collection) at the present time. Pictures, tables, maps and bibliographies are being added. Countries in bold print on the browse list have already been updated. Search the full text by keyword or use chapter headings. The material is not copyrighted, but credit should be given.
  • Foreign Affairs Online
    "This web site has been specifically designed to assist students and other individuals interested in International Law, International Relations, and U.S. Foreign Policy" by Robert Beck of the University of Virginia. Contains thousands of links, well organized, including maps and periodical articles.
  • Portals to the World
    Not yet complete, the site lists web resources chosen by Library of Congress subject experts. Easy to navigate. Emphasis on current documents, but includes some history links.
  • World Factbook
    Researched by the CIA, individual country profiles are listed alphabetically with brief information on geography, population, politics and economies.

    "Official statistics...for social, demographic and economic information" from the Department of Commerce with current and historical statistics, population clocks, keyword searching, links to local, state and international population information. Click on News for statistical briefs (requires Adobe Acrobat® to view).
  • FedStats
    Federal Interagency Council on Statistical Policy maintains this page as a gateway site to more than 70 different US agencies that compile statistical information: Areas include: Agriculture, Crime, Demographics, Economic, Education, Energy, Environment, Health, Income, Labor, National Accounts, Natural Resources, Safety, and Transportation Statistics.
  • Government Information Sharing Project
    The U.S. government and Oregon State University list a number of databases for demographic, economic, and governmental information spanning several decades and sources for county comparisons and profiles.
  • Sourcebook of Criminal Justice Statistics
    Over 600 tables from the US Bureau of Justice Statistics. See also Bureau of Justice Statistics for more statistical analysis and information on crime, criminial and the justice system in general.
  • Statistical Abstract of the United States
    You may prefer to go to the print version of this book in the Reference Room (R317), but if you spend a little time here, you will be rewarded. All tables are downloaded in Adobe Acrobat ® PDF, and are very readable when printed. If you don't know what you're looking for, however, you have to download the index first to use it. The index refers to TABLE NUMBERS, not page numbers in the main section.

    Begun at the University of Michigan in 1963, the Project collects data on war and military disputes.
  • PopNet
    International statistics on population and population related issues, keyword searching and maps.
  • United Nations Statistics Division
    This site reproduces data from many UN publications in the areas of: Millennium Profiles(poverty), Demographic & Social, Energy, Environment, Industry, National Accounts, and Trade. Some information requires a subscription.
  • Word Bank Group: Data and Maps
    Selections from WORLD DEVLOPMENT INDICATORS are here, plus a great many tables and maps, some of which require Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher to see.
  • Your Nation
    If ony all web pages could be so easy to use. Choose COMPARE, RANK or SUMMARY on the simple interface and set modifier. The answers are animated, making statistics a little more interesting.
