  • ADAM
    Currently in transition to the Arts and Creative Industries (ACI) Hub, "ADAM, the Art, Design, Architecture & Media Information Gateway, is a searchable catalogue of Internet resources that have been carefully selected and catalogued by professional librarians." The search engine operates very well.
  • African-Americans in the Visual Arts
    This site collects essays and exhibits on African American art with overviews and some hyperlinks to important persons and events.
  • Boston College Arts Department
    Contains extensive links to art history pages, images online and film studies.
  • Museum Computer Network
    Mostly concerned with museum related issues like intellectual property, but includes the 1700 site list which the National History Museum of Los Angeles County maintained.
  • Mark Harden's Artchive
    An online "museum" offering images of art from galleries and museums from around the world. An exceptionally good site to locate just images (supporting documentation is brief). Excellent JavaScript viewer.
  • National Gallery of Art, Washington , DC
    Virtual tours and background essays on its collection. Best used for locating information on a particular theme or artist with the search engine.
  • Symbols.com; Liungman's Thought Signs
    An online version of Carl Liungman's Thought Signs, this easy to use electronic database contains more that 2,500 Western signs. The hierarchical index is easy to use and each sign is graphically depicted with a short explanation.
  • World Wide Arts Resources
    An excellent interactive gateway to arts information and culture on the web. Use search engine to access the more than 8000 artists and art related sites. Also browse the Artist Index of more than 100 categories.

    A gateway site to annotated lists of links on art and art history. The site is categorized by geographic location and time period. From Sweet Briar College.
  • fineArt Forum--Art Museums and Art History
    A directory of art museums and art history sites arranged alphabetically by title and subject.
  • The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN)
    "The Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN) is a structured vocabulary developed primarily for the field of art history. Geographic names from the thesaurus can be used to record the current location of the art object, its place of origin, the loci of activity of the artist, and the sites of the artist's birth and death."
  • Mother of All Art History Link Pages
    Extensive listing of art history related links including: art history department, image collections online, museums, and linguistic resources.
  • Origins of American Animation
    A digitized collection of animated movies and stills from 1900 to 1921. Explores the connection between film and art in the early part of the 20th century. From the Library of Congress, part of the American Memory Project.

  • Great Buildings Online
    Features "...architecture around the world and across history." This site documents buildings, leading architects, offers 3D models, photographic images and architectural drawings, commentaries, bibliographies and web links.
  • Digital Archives of American Architecture
    Contains images and history of American (17th century on) and European architecture.

  • All-Music Guide
    The AMG is one of the first music web sites and one of the most successful. The search engine allows searching by: artists, albums, song titles, styles and record labels. Additional features are "Music Maps" flow charts, essays and a glossary.
  • Andante
    A very complete classical music site with a busy interface and headings that may take a little getting used to. Well worth the time for up-to-date information.
  • Blue Flame Cafeé
    Over 150 authoritative, up-to-date biographies of important blues singers and musicians. While the biographies are not lengthy, they do provide a starting point. CURRENTLY NOT OPERATING.
  • Electronic Music InterACTIVE
    An introduction to e-music. Features extensive explanations on some 38 topics, along with an interactive glossary, animation and graphics. Developed by the New Media Center at the University of Oregon.
  • John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recordings
    "The John and Ruby Lomax 1939 Southern States Recording Trip is a multi-format ethnographic field collection that includes nearly 700 sound recordings, as well as photographic prints, field notes, dust jackets, and other manuscripts" of folksongs of the southern United States. See the American Folklife Center, a division of the Library of Congress, for more music recordings and history.
  • Harvard University Internet Resources for Music Scholars
    Scholarly links to information about music at Harvard, the Boston area, and the world.
  • International Lyrics Server
    Full text of thousands of songs with an easy to use search engine.
  • MHN Instrument Encyclopedia
    The Musical Heritage Network's Instrument Encyclopedia goal is to provide information concerning 140 instruments from the Sterns Collection of Musical Instruments.   Combines text, images, and is searchable by name.
  • Musicals 101
    Consists of essays, indexes, photos, history and overviews of musicals from 1920-present. Deals primarily with Broadway, but other venues are covered.
  • Operabase
    Operabase maintains an extensive gateway site to opera on the web. Covers: composers, opera houses, interactive resources, and listings of festivals, as well as news and reviews.
  • Public Domain Music
    You can find thousands of songs here in the public domain, plus information on exactly what that term means.
  • University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios
    Focus on electroacoustic and computer music. Tour the studios, read full-text research articles.
  • University of North Dakota Music Composition Resource
    Books, articles, sound recordings, FAQ's and more links.
  • Music Personalities and Biographies

  • Marian Anderson
    Marian Anderson, the First African American to sing at the Metropolitan Opera, in New York. This site from the University of Pennsylvania contains an on-line index to the more than 4,000 unique images.

  • American Ballet Theatre
    Contains an extensive ballet dictionary, current productions, photo essays and history. Use the Navigation Bar at the top.
  • Sapphire Swan Dance Directory
    Although a bit difficult to navigate, this site provides links to other sites dealing with nontraditional dance forms. Has a very large ballet section, as well. Provides an overview of dance and dance resources.

    Film and Theater

  • Art on Film Online
    "Art on Film Online is a clearinghouse for information about film, video, CD-ROM and other interactive productions on fine arts, architecture, photography, decorative arts, and related topics. This Web site is a service of the Program for Art on Film, Inc..." User must register before being able to search by keyword, artist, title, subject or production credits.
  • Playbill Online
    Detailed links include national and international theater news, theater listings, newsletters and job postings.
  • Screenwriters/Playwrights Page
    Advice for new and experienced writers, FAQs, scripts and links to general writing resources.
  • Yahoo! Theatre Directory
    A gateway list of sites pertaining to the discipline of dance and theatre. Covers history, ethnic dance, plays, applied and interactive theater and more.

  • Photo Study Collection at the Getty Research Institute
    In addition to the scholarly study of the photograph, there is information here on images of art and architecture from classic to modern.
  • Photographic Libraries. com
    This site could use the services of a good librarian to organize it--the list of photographic web sites is hard to read and in no particular order. A good site to browse if you have the time, though.
