Take time to Reflect

Reflecting on the Process and Product

If selecting a good topic is the hardest step in the research process, the final step of reflection and assessment is arguably the most important.

Three types of assessment are significant:

1. Objective assessment of the product.

The objective assessment of your efforts is the grade that you receive from your instructor.

2. Self-assessment of the product.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Does this product satisfy all of the requirements of the assignment as presented by my instructor?
  2. Is the product grammatically correct, interesting, and well written?
  3. Is the product original work, including appropriate citations of all sources?
  4. Does the product answer the questions of my research? Are all of the ideas supported with evidence?
  5. Is this my best work?

3. Self-assessment of the process.

The specific information that you assimilated in researching a topic and displaying your knowledge in a product is important, but ultimately less important than the fact that you experienced the process. Knowledge of the process is a skill that is transferable to other inquiries that you will make in school, in work, and in life.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Did I develop a research plan and timetable before commencing my work?
  2. Did I spend enough time in gaining an overview? In developing a focused topic?
  3. Did I develop a working vocabulary for use in searching for information?
  4. Did I identify the best sources of information for my topic? Did I consult an OWHL Librarian? Did I use a wide range of sources?
  5. Did I take notes in a manner that was efficient, effective, and ethical?
  6. Did I cite all sources in the prescribed manner?
