The Research Process

Yes, it takes time

but this process helps you to be an efficient and effective researcher.

About Research
Choosing a Topic
Gaining an Overview
Finding the Best Source
Evaluating the Sources
Documenting the Sources
Using the Sources
Reflecting on the Process and Product

Step 1: THINK about what you are required to do.

What is the assignment? When is it due? What materials will you need. Think about your possible topics or area of interest. Got notecards?

Step 2: OVERVIEW in reference books. The Garver Room is arranged by Dewey Decimal System. It's logical and easy to browse.

Step 3: MODIFY your topic if necessary. You should now have a specific topic or thesis that could be the first sentence of your paper.

Step 4: BUILD THE PAPER : Gather, assess, comprehend, interpret and evaluate the information.

    • Print Resources: OWL Online Catalog
    • Electronic Resources: Infotrac and other databases on the library's home page

Step 5: WRITE THE PAPER. Synthesize and organize the information. Document the source of information

Step 6: EVALUATE YOUR WORK.

  1. Did you accomplish your objectives? Was your process efficient and effective?
  2. Time spent in evaluating your process and product will pay off in future papers. See a Reference Librarian to discuss how you can improve.
  3. Was your process ethical and consistent with PA's intellectual property code? Consider especially copyright issues, plagiarism, and Network Acceptable Use.
