Archives and Special Collections

Phillips Academy Archives

To an unusual degree the history of Phillips Academy is entwined with those of our nation. The Academy Archive contains extensive documentation of the history of the school, but in a larger sense it reflects the development of America. It is an extensive collection comprising over 6,000 linear feet of records and continues to grow. The merger with Abbot Academy in 1972-1973 brought Abbot's Archive into the academy, so the founding of both schools is well documented in our archive.

The Phillips Academy Archives are home to such collections as the head of school papers dating back to 1778, student records, financial records and an extensive visual collection. Student publications, including a complete run of The Phillipian, the student newspaper first published in 1878, are also housed in the archive.

The archive collection is available to scholars and researchers demonstrating a need. Upon request to Ruth Quattlebaum, the Academy Archivist, materials can be made available.

Please contact the archivist in advance, at or by telephone 978-749-4069, to arrange an appointment to use materials.
