Circulation Services

A current Phillips Academy ID is required to check out materials.  Students, staff, faculty and alumni are granted full borrowing privileges. Patrons may check their records, place holds, and renew materials online with a PIN number. See a librarian for details.

Loan Periods and Renewals
Books:

Students may check out an unlimited number of books for a period of three weeks. Faculty may keep books for the term. Books may be renewed, provided another patron has not requested the material.

Videocasettes and DVDs:

Videotapes circulate for one week. DVDs circulate for three nights. A maximum of three VHS and three DVDs per person is permitted. There is no charge to borrow, but fines will be assessed to ALL MEMBERS of the community after three days. The fine is $1.00 per late day per film. After 10 nights of delinquency, borrowing privileges are suspended.

Periodicals:

Neither bound periodical volumes nor current issues of any periodical may leave the library.  However, at the discretion of the librarian, some periodical back issues may be checked out overnight after 8:00 PM. They may not be renewed and there is a limit of 3 per patron.

Return Policy
Each cardholder is solely responsible for returning, on time, any materials checked out on his/her card.  Books and other materials may be returned either at the Circulation Desk or in the book drop slot located on the east side of the library.

Overdues
Fines on books are $.15 per day per item.  Videocasettes and DVDs accrue fines at the rate of $1 per day. Overnight periodicals not returned by 9:00 AM accrue fines at a rate of $.25 per hour.

Holds and Recalls
Can't find what you're looking for? If a book you need is available in the OWHL collection but is not on the shelf, you may place a hold on the book so that you will be notified when it is returned.  See a librarian for details. If you need the book immediately, ask a librarian to place a recall on the book. In this case a notice will be sent to the patron holding the book, requesting its return as soon as possible.

Academic Reserves

Course reserve materials must be requested at the Circulation Desk.

A student must leave an ID at the Circulation Desk when checking out course reserve material and may pick it up when the item is returned.

Reserves are designated either closed or overnight. Closed reserves are checked out for either 1 hour or 2 hours, may not leave the library and will accrue overdue fines at a rate of $1.00 per hour if not returned punctually.

Overnight reserves may be checked out after 8:00 PM and must be returned by 9:00 AM the next day.  Any overnight reserve not returned by 9:00 AM will accrue overdue fines at a rate of $1.00 per hour.

InterLibrary Loan

Materials not available in the OWHL catalog may be obtained from other libraries in the NOBLE consortium or from the catalogs of other Massachusetts library systems through the statewide Virtual Catalog. Please search the NOBLE catalog first. If the title is not available in the NOBLE catalog, try the the Virtual Catalog. Patrons may place a request online for pickup at OWH Library from either catalog with a PIN number and an Andover ID. Materials not available in either of those two library systems may be ordered by an Instructional Librarian from libraries anywhere in the United States through our Interlibrary Loan program. Instructional Librarians will be glad to assist you in obtaining a PIN number, ordering materials from outside our network and in explaining the ordering process within our network.
