How Do I Search in the OWL Catalog?

Open OWL - The Library's Catalog

Enter your search terms.
Use words or phrases and do a KEYWORD search by selecting SEARCH EVERYTHING, the default option.
SUBJECT is the Library of Congress Subject Heading.
If you are searching for a title, and you are not sure of the exact title, enter only those words you know are correct.
Combine terms with and, or or not.
(teenage OR adolescent OR teen) AND health
Choose Complex Search or Call No. Browse tabs if you want to do more than a quick search.

Choose a target search field:
  • Search Everything - Searches all fields in a record (all book information), including chapter headings if indexed.
  • Author - Last name first will put you into a helpful browse list if you misspell it.
  • Title - Use all or part of the title.
  • Subject - Searches only Library of Congress Subject Headings. Ask a Librarian for help using this field.
  • Periodical Title - Periodical holdings including title and last issue received.

or print indexes like the READERS' GUIDE TO PERIODICAL LITERATURE or THE NEW YORK TIMES INDEX.

Advanced Features

Complex Search:
To search with Boolean Operators (AND, OR and NOT), truncate or substitute.

Truncation:
The '$' can take the place of one or more characters to allow for searching of variants
(Unexpected combinations might be retrieved):
folk$ = folk, folklore, folkways and folklife col$r = color, colour, collier and collar


Substitution:
The '?' takes the place of just one character:
Wom?n searches for both Women and Woman
Muslim? searches for both Muslims and Muslim
