OWHL Celebrates Teen Read Week
Andover students will be reading for the fun of it as the OWHL celebrates Teen Read Week(TM), October 18 – 24, 2009. We will be joining thousands of other libraries, schools and bookstores across the country who are encouraging teens to celebrate this year’s theme, "Read Beyond Reality @ your library”. This year’s theme encourages teens to read a wide variety of materials that are out of this world, just for the fun of it.
“Our students have a very heavy academic load, and there are countless activities competing for what little leisure time they have," said Elisabeth Tully, Director of the OWHL. "But that’s exactly why we believe that it is essential to encourage them to set aside some time to read."
The OWHL is highlighting recreational reading during Teen Read Week with a display of popular young adult fiction and a reading challenge. Any student checking out a book (or obtaining one of our full-text downloadable audiobooks) to read for pleasure during the week will be entered into a raffle for a chance to win one of five 2G thumb drives.
Studies show that a regular reading habit increases reading proficiency and contributes to academic success. Tully believes that “For our students to become lifelong learners, it is essential for them to develop the reading habit.” The OWHL is committed to help students develop that essential habit by purchasing and displaying popular print titles, acquiring audiobooks to supplement and support academic work, and offering programs promoting the enjoyment of reading.
