The European economy since 1945 : coordinated capitalism and beyond
Eichengreen, Barry J.
330.94 EI34EU
In 1945, many Europeans still heated with coal, cooled their food with ice, and lacked indoor plumbing. Today, things could hardly be more different.
Over the second half of the twentieth century, the average European's buying
power tripled, while working hours fell by a third. The European Economy since
1945 is a broad, accessible, forthright account of the extraordinary development
of Europe's economy since the end of World War II. Barry Eichengreen argues that
the continent's history has been critical to its economic performance, and that
it will continue to be so going forward. Challenging standard views that basic
economic forces were behind postwar Europe's success, Eichengreen shows how
Western Europe in particular inherited a set of institutions singularly well
suited to the economic circumstances that reigned for almost three decades.
Economic growth was facilitated by solidarity-centered trade unions, cohesive
employers' associations, and growth-minded governments--all legacies of Europe's
earlier history. For example, these institutions worked together to mobilize
savings, finance investment, and stabilize wages. However, this inheritance of
economic and social institutions that was the solution until around 1973--when
Europe had to switch from growth based on brute-force investment and the
acquisition of known technologies to growth based on increased efficiency and
innovation--then became the problem. Thus, the key questions for the future are
whether Europe and its constituent nations can now adapt their institutions to
the needs of a globalized knowledge economy, and whether in doing so, the
continent's distinctive history will be an obstacle or an asset.

The wages of destruction : the making and breaking of the Nazi economy
Tooze, Adam.
330.943 T66WA
In this groundbreaking history, Tooze provides the clearest picture to date of the Nazi war machine and its undoing. There was no aspect of Nazi power
untouched by economics--it was Hitler's obsession and the reason the Nazis came
to power in the first place. The Second World War was fought, in Hitler's view,
to create a European empire strong enough to take on the United States. But as
this book makes clear, Hitler's armies were never powerful enough to beat either
Britain or the Soviet Union--and Hitler never had a serious plan as to how he
might defeat the United States. An eye-opening and controversial account that
will challenge conventional interpretations of the period.

The Silk Road and beyond : travel, trade, and transformation
909.09 SI49
The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that extended from Asia to the Mediterranean Sea, linking powerful civilizations such as Rome and
China. Featuring over forty intriguing objects both ancient and modern, from the
Art Institutes collection, this volume explores the Silk Roads fascinating
historical and contemporary significance. Ranging from ancient Chinese tomb
figures to works by such contemporary artists as Lalla Essaydi, the selections
reflect an intense exchange between cultures and provide new ways of looking at
and thinking about Eastern and Western art. With an essay that explores how the
Silk Road fostered an exchange of goods, styles, and ideas between East and West,
the book also includes a conversation between James Cuno, the museums director,
and world renowned cellist YoYo Ma. They discuss the Silk Road as a metaphor for
the continuous circulation of visual and musical motifs and ideas between
cultures today.

June 1941 : Hitler and Stalin
Lukacs, John, 1924-
940.54 L95J
This new portrait of two great leaders confronting each other in June 1941 describes Hitler and Stalin's strange, calculating, and miscalculating
relationship before the German invasion of Soviet Russia, with its gigantic (and
unintended) consequences. Lukas questions many long-held beliefs. He suggests,
for example, that among other things Hitler's first purpose involved England: if
Stalin's Communist Russia were to be defeated, Hitler's Third Reich would be
well-nigh invincible, and the British and American peoples would be forced to
rethink the war against Hitler. Lukas presents evidence that Hitler (rather than
his generals) had moments of dark foreboding before the invasion. Stalin could
not, because he wished not, believe that Hitler would choose the risk of a two-
front war by attacking him; he was stunned and shocked and came close to a
breakdown. But he recovered, grew into a statesman, and eventually became a
prime victor of the Second World War.--From publisher description.

Twentieth century China : a history in documents
Schoppa, R. Keith, 1943-
951 SCH6T
In its period of slow decline from the late 18th into the early 20th century and throughout its 20th century revolution, one of the most important
problems facing individual Chinese and China as a nation was choosing
appropriate political, social, cultural, and economic identities as contexts and
situations changed. This documentary history of 20th century China begins with
the turn-of-the-century Boxer uprising to set the stage for understanding the
choices at stake for 20th century Chinese. It then focuses on the always-
dramatic choices of identity that have continually confronted the Chinese. In
many cases these choices have meant life or death. Above all, this is a story of
the people whose choices propelled modern Chinese history. It is a dramatic tale,
often bloody and violent, alternately soaring with hope and plunging into bleak
despair. It compels our interest because of its importance for the world today;
because it is one of world history's greatest revolutions; and because it
provides an extraordinarily interesting study of the processes that an ancient
culture undergoes in transforming itself into that which we call
"modern."Twentieth-Century China: A History in Documents uses an exceptional
range of primary sources, including government edicts, political cartoons,
poetry, political manifestos, essays, fiction, magazine covers and
advertisements, wills, trial transcripts, speeches, statistics, press releases,
and even Chinese rock lyrics. The entire book is profusely illustrated with
graphics that themselves serve as documents, and there is also a picture essay.
Back matter will include a chronology, further reading, and index.

Dreams from my father : a story of race and inheritance
Obama, Barack.
973.04 OB24DR
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a blackAfrican father and a white American mother searches for a workable meaning to
his life as a black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns
that his father, a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man, has been killed
in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey, first to a
small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother's
family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his
family, confronts the bitter truth of his father's life, and at last reconciles
his divided inheritance.

Age of betrayal : the triumph of money in America, 1865-1900
Beatty, Jack.
973.8 B387AG
A fresh look at the Gilded Age, when an oligarchy of wealth triumphed over democracy. At the end of the Civil War, with the rebellion put down and
slavery ended, America belonged to Lincoln's "plain people." But "government of
the people" and economic democracy were betrayed by political parties that
fanned memories of the war to distract Americans from government of the
corporation. Jay Gould, the "Mephisto of Wall Street," never runs for office,
but he rules. A depression brought on by railroad speculation throws millions
out of work, the hungry riot for bread in Buffalo, the homeless sleep on
Chicago's streets, strikers are shot, and the nation's presidents avert their
eyes. God instructs President McKinley to invade Cuba and seize the Philippines
from Spain; turning from liberators to occupiers, U.S. troops slaughter and
starve the (Roman Catholic) Filipinos in the name of "Christianizing" them.--

The last days of the Incas
MacQuarrie, Kim.
985 M16LA
In 1532, the fiftyfour year old Spanish conquistador,Francisco Pizarro, led a force of 167 men, including his four brothers, to the shores of Peru.
Unbeknownst to the Spaniards, the Inca rulers of Peru had just fought a bloody
civil war in which the emperor Atahualpa had defeated his brother Huascar.
Pizarro and his men soon clashed with Atahualpa and a huge force of Inca
warriors at the Battle of Cajamarca. Despite being outnumbered by more than two
hundred to one, the Spaniards prevailed -- due largely to their horses, their
steel armor and swords, and their tactic of surprise. They captured and
imprisoned Atahualpa. Although the Inca emperor paid an enormous ransom in gold,
the Spaniards executed him anyway. The following year, the Spaniards seized the
Inca capital of Cuzco, completing their conquest of the largest native empire
the New World has ever known. Peru was now a Spanish colony, and the
conquistadors were wealthy beyond their wildest dreams. But the Incas did not
submit willingly. A young Inca emperor, the brother of Atahualpa, soon led a
massive rebellion against the Spaniards, inflicting heavy casualties and nearly
wiping out the conquerors. Eventually, however, Pizarro and his men forced the
emperor to abandon the Andes and flee to the Amazon. There, he established a
hidden capital, called Vilcabamba. Although the Incas fought a deadly, thirtysix
year long guerrilla war, the Spanish ultimately captured the last Inca emperor
and vanquished the native resistance. Kim MacQuarrie lived in Peru for five
years and became fascinated by the Incas and the history of the Spanish
conquest. Drawing on both native and Spanish chronicles, he vividly describes
the dramatic story of the conquest, with all its savagery and suspense.
MacQuarrie also relates the story of the modern search for Vilcabamba, of how
Machu Picchu was discovered, and of how a trio of colorful American explorers
only recently discovered the lost Inca capital of Vilcabamba, hidden for
centuries in the Amazon. This authoritative, exciting history is among the most
powerful and important accounts of the culture of the South American Indians and
the Spanish Conquest. -- From publisher description.
