Named Areas

The Oliver Wendell Holmes Library exists as the result of the hard work, clear vision, and generous donations of countless individuals over the years.   The library is named for Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., a PA alumnus who played an important role in the life of the school. Other named areas on the second floor honor individuals for unique and lasting impacts on the Academy.  The McLean Gallery is named for Donald McLean, PA 1928.  In addition to the library, a room on the second floor is named for Holmes.  Other named rooms on the second floor include the Abbot Academy Room, the China Room, the Kansas City Room, and the Phillips Academy Room.

Three magnificent rooms on the library’s main floor honor individuals whose generosity made their restoration possible.  The Garver Reference Room is named for John Anson Garver, PA 1871.  The Dole Room honors Alexander Dole, PA 1920.  The Freeman Room was named in honor of Archibald Freeman, a beloved History teacher who taught at the Academy from 1892-1937.

Two students in the class of 2002 established the Center for Global Justice, on the ground floor of the library, with a grant from the Abbot Academy Association.
