Garver Reference Room

The Garver Room houses the library’s main reference collection. It was part of the original building completed in 1929, and is currently used for quiet study.

The Garver Room is named for John Anson Garver from the class of 1871. He was a lawyer in New York City, and a friend of Thomas Cochran, who funded the building of the library. Garver’s son, Chauncey, a member of the class of 1904, donated the painting of John Garver at the west end of the room.

Did You Know?

The Abbot Academy girls liked to organize a Ladies’ Levee (similar to a tea party) and would sell tickets to Andover residents. There is a poster in the Abbot Room announcing one held in 1854. A grand levee was typically held at graduation.
