"Woolbridge Manor":

Hermann Lea identifies this building with "Wellbridge House," where Angel and Tess went after their wedding. He writes, "It is probable that, of all the scenes which occur throughout the Wessex Novels, no place is so near to reality or so familiar to my readers as this house." (Vol.I, 31)

"The Vale of Blackmoor":

"It is a vale whose acquaintance is best made by viewing it from the summits of the hills that surround it...."(Chapter II) This photograph was taken from "the hill-town called Shaston" (Chapter V), actually Shaftesbury.
