#2 "Puddletown Church Tower, with Gargoyle":
"The tower of Weatherbury Church was a square erection of fourteenth-century date, having two stone gurgoyles on each of the four faces of its parapet." (Chapter XLVI). Hardy was careful to distinguish between the gargoyle of his story and the one on the church at Puddletown; he notes at the end of the chapter, "The local tower and churchyard do not answer precisely to the foregoing description."
