#1 "Puddletown Church":

This church is where Sergeant Troy buries Fanny Robin, after which he falls asleep: "He groped along the wall and over the graves in the dark till he found himself round at the north side. Here he entered the porch, and reclining upon the bench within, fell asleep."

#2 "Puddletown Church Tower, with Gargoyle":

"The tower of Weatherbury Church was a square erection of fourteenth-century date, having two stone gurgoyles on each of the four faces of its parapet." (Chapter XLVI). Hardy was careful to distinguish between the gargoyle of his story and the one on the church at Puddletown; he notes at the end of the chapter, "The local tower and churchyard do not answer precisely to the foregoing description."
