COMMUNITY SERVICE
  Dorm/Club/Team Participation

Here are some of the agencies/organizations that can handle volunteers for one-time events that dorms can work at as a group on the weekend. Working together at a service project can help a dorm to learn to get along with each other, improve their ability to communicate with each other, treat each other with respect, and learn about issues in the wider community.

Many other options are available. You may contact the Community Service office with any ideas that you have.

Groundwork Lawrence: an organization that works to "bring about the sustained regeneration, improvement and management of the physical environment by developing community-based partnerships which empower people, businesses and organizations to promote environmental, economic, and social well-being." We have yet to work with Groundwork Lawrence and they are relatively new and they could use volunteer groups to help with site clean-ups. The results of some of the work of Groundwork Lawrence can be seen along the Merrimack and Spicket Rivers.

Bread and Roses Housing Trust: Bread and Roses, along with providing food and meal services, also has a group of folks working to increase the availability of affordable housing in Lawrence. They buy property, clean it up, and then sell it in trust to low-income residents. Bread and Roses can use help cleaning up sites.

Greater Boston Food Bank: The food bank distributes approximately 16 million pounds of food per year and about 465,000 meals a month to hungry children, families, elders, and adults. PA volunteers help sort food and fill orders requested by one of 850 member feeding programs that do their shopping at the food bank.

Boston Living Center: The center is a community resource center that works to empower and enhance the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS. PA volunteers help serve meals, work in the daycare room, and can be placed in other assignments based on interests and skills.

The Salem Mission: Works to help provide shelter and food for the homeless and the hungry. PA volunteers do whatever needs doing based on the needs of the shelter

The Meadows: The Meadows is a nursing home located at the Edgewood retirement community in North Andover. The program director is looking for folks to come visit with the residents once or over a longer, more consistent period of time. Groups from the dorms would be welcome

City Year Serve-A-Thon: The Serve-A-Thon takes place in October (Saturday Oct. 27th) in Boston and is a perfect one-time event for a dorm to get involved with. Thousands of people get together and fan out to various project sites throughout Boston for one day of work and service.
