COMMUNITY SERVICE

Award & Grant Opportunities

"You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face... You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
-Eleanor Roosevelt

The Phillips Academy Scholarship Prize Committee awards monetary grants to support students who wish to engage in service projects during the year and over the summer. The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards come from an endowed fund established to recognize and encourage service toward social change in the spirit of Dr. King. The Winton Volunteership Program was established by donors concerned with world hunger and related issues to encourage students to work in community-based self-help efforts to come to a deeper understanding of problems facing underdeveloped communities in the United States or abroad. In addition, the Phelps Award was established to award a generous stipend to a graduating senior to work in the community, preferably in an urban American setting.

Available to both students and faculty, Abbot Academy Association Grants aim to "preserve the spirit, dignity and high standard of the Abbot Academy at Phillips Academy through support of students, faculty, staff and properties at Phillips Academy."

Written proposals for the King, Winton, and Phelps awards must be submitted to the chair of the Scholarship Prize Committee, Christopher Gurry, Instructor in Social Science and History, by the due date - usually at the end of winter term or beginning of spring term. Proposals for Abbot Academy Association grants must be submitted to the dean of studies or the Abbot Academy Association directly. Students interested in any of these grants are strongly advised to speak to the committee chair and the director of community service prior to submitting their applications.
