Making a Bequest Provision

Sarah Abbot and Samuel Phillips were among the first to make bequests to what is now Phillips Academy. Since then, countless alumni, faculty, parents and friends have remembered the Academy in their planning. “Remembering Andover in your will is one of the most personal and affirming gestures possible,” observes Bill Scott ’52 chairman of Andover’s Gift Planning Committee.

Those who wish to follow in the founders’ footsteps by including Andover in their will should designate a percentage or a specific dollar value for “Trustees of Phillips Academy, a charitable and educational institution in Andover, Massachusetts.” Furthermore, donors can designate their bequests toward particular purposes, such as financial aid or faculty support, and can create a permanent endowment fund if the underlying assets are sufficient. To establish an endowment through a charitable bequest, one world make a provision for “Trustees of Phillips Academy, a charitable and educational institution in Andover, Massachusetts, to create, if my bequest is of sufficient value, the (Name, e.g. Samuel Phillips Fund for financial aid). Otherwise, my bequest should be used for the general uses and purposes of the Academy.”

The Samuel Phillips & Sarah Abbot Society

All who include the Academy in their estate qualify for membership in the Samuel Phillips & Sarah Abbot Society. Established to recognize and thank those who have provided for Andover through their estate plans, the society hosts periodic events, sponsors this gift planning newsletter, and sends a gift of appreciation to those who notify the Academy of their intentions.
