With one Andover player sick, three had to move up in Wednesday's boys varsity squash match with Exeter. Unfortunately, two players lost five-game matches at 10-9 in the fifth, and that led to a 4-3 victory for the Red.
Everyone played very well as the boys squash team earned a 5-2 win against Groton on the home courts Friday afternoon. The team is getting near the peak of their game for Exeter this Wednesday and the Interschols on the weekend at Westminster School.
Among the 24 schools participating at the National High School Squash Championships in New Haven, CT over the weekend, Andover finished 12th with some strong play. There was great competition, and everybody in Blue played well! Coach Cone noted that there was lots of high level squash from the Philadelphia area in particular. Standouts for the Andover squad included Dan Wagman who won all of his five matches, while Ned Henningsen won four of his five, and Simon Keyes dramatically improved his game as the weekend went on, also winning four of his five matches. The PA team was defeated in the semi-finals in the first consolation draw to earn their 12th place finish.
The PA varsity squad traveled to Belmont Hill on Wednesday to take on an undefeated team. The Andover players played very well, but the hosts prevailed 7-0.
Henry Manice won two five game matches, both times coming back from down two, to lead the boys varsity squash team to a pair of victories on Saturday. The Blue outplayed host Middlesex 5-2, then blanked Brooks 7-0 to conclude a very successful day on the courts. Derek de Svastich, Ned Henningsen, Greg Feldman, and Simon Keyes joined Manice in winning both of their matches on the day.
Snow did not prevent the PA boys varsity squash team from traveling to Connecticut for a change, and the boys brought home a 7-0 win over host Loomis Chafee. While this is something of a building year for the Pelicans, Andover played excellent squash up and down the line-up to earn the victory.
After being snowed out last Saturday when they were scheduled to play at Choate, Andover's squash boys shut out Deerfield on Wednesday 7 - 0. The team is hoping this hot start will give them momentum in the upcoming matches.
Despite losing close matches at # 1,5, and 6, the PA boys varsity squash team played a strong opening match of the season to earn a 4-3 victory over Tabor. Harry Goldstein (#4) made a good comeback in game 3, and then went on to win his match in four games. Dan Wagman (# 3), Derek DeSvastich (#2) , and Ned Henningsen (#7) swept their matches.
The boys squash team scrimmaged Belmont Hill Wednesday, and PA did very well, though BH was not at full strength. Everyone in Blue looked strong playing two partial matches, and the competition was good conditioning for out first regular match on Saturday against Tabor.
