Physical Education

The Physical Education (PHED 100) course provides students with a foundation to make sound decisions and to promote lifetime wellness. Through experiential learning and activities designed to promote self-evaluation, group dynamics and decision making, the Physical Education course intends to enable students to learn about their confidence, physical education capabilities and potential. The course provides students with active experiences and a safe environment for examining and understanding their responses to problems and challenged-based learning. The course is designed to foster individual development along with group success. Within this framework, the students are encouraged to realize and respect individual definitions of success.

All three- and four-year students are required to complete PE 100 by the end of the lower (10th grade) year.

Pass/fail. Limit of 15 students per section. Five class periods per week. The course integrates health and fitness concepts with self-testing and challenge activities. Classes use the running track, fitness center, ropes course and other areas of the athletic complex. Students learn the drown-proofing survival technique. One period per week is lecture-discussion, requiring some outside reading or other preparation. If the course is failed, the student will repeat it, in full or in part, during a subsequent term. Lowers will be pre-assigned.

Drownproofing

The drownproofing section helps to enhance the comfort level of a person in water. In the pool students learn how to perform the sub-surface float, the travel stroke and how to properly use a personal floatation devices.

Fitness Center

Students in Physical Education learn how to properly use all of the equipment in the Rosenau Fitness Center. Over the course of the term, all students gain experience and knowledge using the cardiovascular machines, the weight machines and the free weights.

Classroom Project
