A four-run fifth inning broke open a 1-1 tie to propel the Blue over a young but promising Buckingham, Browne and Nichols team (3-11) in Cambridge. P Michelle Hollebeke ’08 (5-1) continued her recovery from an injury in a complete-game, four-hit, fifteen-strikeout performance in which she walked none and used more of her repertoire of pitches than at any time this season. PA struck early but then stalled. SS Sarah Boylan ’09 singled with one out and advanced to second on an outfielder’s relay error. C Stephanie Clegg ’08 walked, and then she and Boylan worked a double steal to put runners at second and third. Hollebeke walked to load the bases and, with two outs, CF Nicole Duddy ’08 was hit by a pitch for a painful RBI and a 1-0 lead. BB&N’s Parker, however, would retire eight of the next eleven Andover batters, while PA squandered what chances it had with a series of small mistakes.
Hollebeke set down the first six in order, before the leadoff hitter in the home third reached on an infield error. A fielder’s choice left everybody safe and a one-out single to center tied the game. But in the very next frame Andover tallied four times and pulled away on the strength of some extra-base power aided by walks and errors. RF Sarah Onorato ’11 earned a free pass, as did Boylan. Clegg tripled to deep center field for two runs, and Hollebeke doubled in Clegg. Two ensuing overthrows allowed her to score. 1B Emily Cokorinos ’08 smacked the first of her pair of doubles with two outs, but was stranded. PA now led, 5-1, and the Knights couldn’t mount a threat against Hollebeke, who had settled in by mixing fastballs, changeups and riseballs. She retired the last eight batters she faced. Andover RBI were contributed by Clegg (2), Duddy (1) and Cokorinos (1). Alayna Garbarino ’10 had a busy day at second base, handling four of five chances. After being idled by last Saturday’s rained out twin bill vs. Worcester Academy, Andover’s record now stands at 8-3.

It was a warm and sunny day at the Sorota track this afternoon while we hosted Cushing Academy. This was our "last chance" meet to improve our times, distances, and heights before Interschols. We had a great meet. Aniebiet Ekpa set the Junior record in the 200m and Colleen Flanagan set the Lower record in the pole vault. Andover results follow.

The Big Blue played our best game of the year against the Reggies today, scoring six runs in the top of the first inning. Starting pitcher Matt Renner was perfect through three innings. At the plate, Greg Hanafin was three for three with a walk and two runs scored. Teddy Drake had a pair of seeing-eye singles. The Reggies scored all of their runs in the fourth inning, when the Big Blue defense suffered a lapse with three errors. Bacon-saver Ryan Yost squashed the rally by spearing a line drive at third and diving for the bag to catch the runner off the base. Our in-house efficiency expert, James Poss, closed out the game by using 24 pitches in the final three innings. With tight pitching and defense, timely hitting, and aggressive baserunning, this was a solid team win.

It was a great day for tennis and the meeting between these two previously undefeated squads. Excellent tennis was played by both teams, unfortunately for the home team we came up one set short. Milton's team is composed of all but one senior, so they're not short on experience. Maggie Maffione deserves special mention for her singles performance. Despite leg cramps, Maggie persevered!
These are the results:
1) Eliza Flynn vs Tori Aiello 3-6, 4-6
2) Lauren Wilmarth vs Sarah Miller 4-6, 1-6
3) Belinda Ortega vs Sophie Panarese 4-6, 1-6
4) Carolyn Brown vs Ali Apfel 6-4, 6-1

The girls' JV lacrosse team played an excellent game today against Milton Academy. The team hustled to every ground ball and dominated the time of possession. Midfield and low defense stifled the Milton attackers and came up with multiple turnovers including a few interceptions. At the other end of the field our attackers worked together to create many scoring opportunities. Goals were scored by KT Hess (1), Anna Mackey (3), Anneke Heher (3), Kim Kouch (3) and Elizabeth Gilbert (1). Anna Mackey, Kim Kouch, and Caitlin Aylward each tallied one assist while Kellie Walsh added two. It was a great effort all around!

On May 7th, the BJV tennis squad traveled to South Hamilton (MA) to play Pingree School in what turned out to be a relatively easy victory for PA at 8-1. Needless to say, there was excitement especially at the # 1 singles position featuring John Ingram. John started the afternoon, teaming up in doubles with Mike Scogs, winning the match in tiebreaker fashion at 9-7. PA had several match points that eluded the boys until finally they closed the deal. It was good sign, for in his singles play, John battled back from a 3-6 deficit to WIN his match at 8-6. Great points on both sides of the net and a thrill for his Dad (watching) and a few other PA rooters at the scene. The doubles team of Chung/Kim won their match easily at 8-3 with Kim later winning his singles play at 8-1. Connor McAuliffe & Chris Kent made easy goings in their double match winning at 8-0. Shortly after, Connor beat a very consistent Pingree player in a good battle with the victory at 8-3. Mike Scogs had several opportunities to win his singles match in easy fashion, but let his opponent climb back in. However, Scogs closed him out in a tight 8-6 victory. Dan Moroz coasted to a singles victory at 8-0. The only PA loss was suffered by Chris Kent at 3-7, but it was a good match with some tough points lost & won. In exhibition play, the double of Moroz/Esakof easily defeated the Pingree pair at 8-2. Next week, BJV has 3 matches scheduled for Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. To be continued... |

After allowing Worcester to score an early goal, Andover settled down and scored 2 goals in the first half to lead 2-1 at halftime. Andover then took control of the game by scoring twice in each of the final quarters to seal away the victory. Andover was led by a stingy defense, a patient offense, and continued fine play in the goal.

On a rainy Saturday afternoon the PA nine traveled to Exeter for a league doubleheader and came home with a split of the two games. After the Exeter players and coaches worked hard to make the field playable, Andover grabbed on 1-0 lead in the top of the first when J.R. Santaniello came home on a Bobby Farnham ground ball. But the lead was short-lived, as the Red scored 2 in the bottom of the first in this back and forth contest. Preston Atteberry pitched well, retiring 12 of 15 batters he faced in the middle innings before Exeter scratched out single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 4-3 lead. The Blue battled back as Mike Palermo got on to lead off the seventh and advanced to third on Mike Ciummei’s double. A sacrifice fly by Ryan McCarthy plated Paermo with the tying run, but the rally ended there. In the bottom of the seventh, Atteberry retired the first two batters, but then Exeter strung together 3 singles to score the winning run. Catcher Geoff Lynch had 2 hits and 2 RBI’s in the game for PA.

Meanwhile Jack Walsh, Bennett Carroccio, Mike Ciummei, and Santaniello all had multiple hits and at least one RBI to fuel the offense. Exeter managed a single run in the seventh off reliever Bryan Farris, but the Blue finished with a 9-1 win and improved their league record to 6-2. Andover hosted our Loomis rematch, victorious by 3-2 (32-30, 18-30, 26-30, 30-27, 16-14) by the slimmest possible margin in the first and fifth game.
In the first game Andover had to wrestle back the lead in the very first parts of the game, then took a commanding lead at 20-13. Loomis managed to fight back and take a lead at 24-23, after which the game was tied up 6 more times before Andover finally managed the "overtime" win of that game, even though committing a 4 service mistakes and 4 net plays.
Game 2 saw a dominant Loomis squad. Andover managed to tie the game at 5-5, but thereafter held the service for two consecutive serves only once; that means Andover only scored 5 of its points on serve.
Game 3 Loomis pulled ahead and had a 9-point lead at 18-9. Andover managed to chip away at the lead but in the end succumbed to Loomis' #10 libero serving top-spin curve balls.
Game 4, despite 3 service errors and 4 net violations, Andover squeezed out a win at the very end. The game was tied 8 times before Loomis took a 4-point lead at 13-9. Andover finally managed to tie it back up at 24-24, though lost the lead to Loomis again 27-25. At this point Sam Burwell '09 stepped to the service line and the 4 consecutive serves needed to tie the match at 2 apiece.
The deciding 5th game see-sawed as well. Loomis took a 4-1 advantage, Andover brought it back to 4-3. Loomis was now ahead 5-3, turned the ball over to Andover's Christian Anderson, on whose serve Andover secured 3 points to take a 7-5 lead. Loomis brought it back to 7-7, and Andover took the lead at 8-7 on a turnover and switching sides. Andover was ahead 10-9 when Loomis' served them to a 12-10 advantage. At 11-14 Andover's Alex Svec '08 took to the service line and served 3 straight to tie the game at 14-14. The last play of the game: Alex Svec served the ball, Loomis returned it, Andover defended successfully and placed it into setter's Alex hands who shot the ball to the outside...James McGuinness takes a flying leap and deftly tips the ball over the block and down the Loomis line, behind their coverage.
Andover, after injuries and absences, earns a much-desired win in the prep league bringing their in-league record to 1-4 (overall 3-6 counting the two scrimmages versus in-town rival AHS). Andover has one more league game versus Choate Saturday May 10th which will determine the seedings for the 4-team tournament hosted at NMH on May 17th.
Menelik Washington wraps up the game with 10 kills and 9 stuffs, blocking 16 of 24, serving 16 of 17. Alex Svec earns 15 assists, 4 kills, and serves 14 of 17. James McGuinness 8 kills, 9 assists, serves 17 of 19. Zach Dixon brings up 44 of 46 serve receives successfully and served 2 aces on 19 serves out of 22.

After its five game winning streak was halted by Governor's on Wednesday, Andover got back on track with a win over visiting Tabor. On a cold and cloudy afternoon, Andover played well end to end and received contributions from its entire team. Defensively, goalie Kate Foley was strong in the net as she made 7 saves, won several ground balls and made many fine clears. Offensively, Alissa Fromkin, Emily Little and Summer Washburn each had 3 goals; Jamie Harisiades, Britney Van Valkenburg, Nancy Ann Little and Dana Feeny all had 2 goals and adding single goals were: Lisa Lian, Maggie Law, Jen Downing and Avery Stone. Assists were tallied by: Fromkin, Washburn, Van Valkenburg, Harisiades, Sam Lawson and Emily Rademacher. Andover will host Milton on Wednesday afternoon. |

After a tough loss to Governor's on Wednesday the PA JV1 team was hungry for a victory on Saturday. With an emphasis on draw control and accurate shots the team dominated both halves of the game. Kim Kouch and Julie Ingram held down the mid-field with their pressure defense and numerous ground ball pickups while the low defense forced a number of turnovers to regain possession. On the attack, seven players notched at least one goal. First year players Kellie Walsh and KT Hess each had two goals, co-captain Anna Mackey had two goals, and Julie Ingram, Kim Kouch, Anneke Heher, and Jackie Wallace combined for 7 goals. Overall it was a great win and we are looking forward to playing again this Wednesday against Milton.

On a cold, rainy day, the Big Blue prevailed over crosstown rival Andover High School's freshman team. Although Phillips Academy led at halftime, 3-1, AHS came back strong and tied the game at 4-4 with 14 minutes left in the second half. The teams exchanged turnovers on the slippery field for a while until Sophie Gould '11 found the back of the net after a beautiful feed from Brenna Liponis '10. Less than a minute later, Liponis scored on a free position to make it 6-4; but AHS answered right back with a goal of their own. With 1:40 left on the clock, Gould added an insurance goal to make it 7-5. Goalie Gauri Thaker '10 had a fantastic game between the pipes. Thaker made a total of seven saves today, including a huge last-minute stop to preserve the win.
Scoring for Phillips Academy: Liponis (3 goals, 1 assist); Gould (3 goals), Mandi Thran '11 (1 goal). Delaney Burke '11, Carolyn Harmeling '11, Emily Kent '11, Megan Robertson '11, and Emily Timm '11 also played well for the Blue.
Thanks to all the friends and family who braved the weather to support our team!

Maybe there's something to this acid rain thing, because the raindrops surely stung yesterday. Having finished four innings of our best baseball of the year, the Big Blue was forced to shut it down. While the scorebook is waterlogged, it still shows some superb performances including seven hits. Greg Hanafin had a single and a double with an rbi and run scored; and Teddy Drake legged out a single and then stole second. On the mound, Vincent D'Andrea commanded the strike zone with six strikeouts while allowing just two hit in four innings.
While the victory may have been washed away, we hope to build on this soggy foundation.

On an overcast and eventually rainy Friday afternoon, the BJV2 lacrosse team traveled to Hamilton, MA to square off against Pingree. In a back and forth first quarter, the teams traded tallies and the first quarter ended with with Andover holding a 3-2 lead. Andover's one goal advantage held into the third quarter when PA doubled their lead by capitalizing on a man up opportunity. Junior Mark Hanson scored what can be best described as the season's flashiest goal by catching a pass in front of the Pingree goal and finding the twine while shooting behind his own back. Unfortunately for Andover, Pingree mounted a charge late in the fourth quarter and stormed all the way back to tie the game. With a little over three minutes left to play, Pingree took advantage of a heads up substitution to hit a streaking attackman with a pass that he was able to bury for the team's fifth tally of the afternoon. In an exciting game that went down to the wire, Andover suffered its fourth loss of the season falling 5-4 to host Pingree. PA goaltender Mitch Everts, who was substituting for regular netminder Eric Yoon, put forth a valiant effort finishing the contest with 11 saves.

What a fine job everyone did today! We played an excellent Andover High School JV squad and were able to hold our own. After a very close first game in which PA recovered from game point to win 31-29, we began to get our game together. Games 2 and 3 were also close, but PA generally kept the lead to the final game point.
I am particulary pleased at how well the team blocked and dug very hard hits from AHS. As has been the case throughout the season, our serves have been consistently excellent.

Phillips hosted Andover HS for a full-scale scrimmage. AHS bested PA 3-0 (30-26,30-27, 30-22).
Occasionally a spirited rally would excite the players and the crowd, typically toward the end of a game. Beautiful plays on the outsides, quicks in the middle, 12 total stuff blocks accentuated a good scrimmage. AHS covered the court very well and found Phillips' weak spots often enough to secure a 3-0 win. Alex Svec, Brian Watson, and Menelik Washington each scored 6 kills; James McGuinness earned 12 assists ina 6-2 rotation. Brian Watson earned 7 stuff blocks.

On the nicest day of the current week, the stormy spring weather cleared in time for the BJV2 lacrosse team to square off against Austin Prep in its fifth game of the season. The game saw both teams battle hard in a closely contested first half that ended with Austin holding a one goal advantage over PA. To start the second half, the Austin offense came out of the gate strong reeling off five third quarter goals to head into the final stanza up by a score of 6-1. Unfortunately, the PA offense was never able to get on track. While the Big Blue of Andover did manage to get on the board thanks to a fourth quarter goal by Mark Hanson, PA came out on the losing end of a 7-1 decision. Goaltender Eric Yoon kept the Austin offense at bay to the best of his ability recording 10 saves in the loss. The team will next face Pingree on the road this Friday.

The NEMA tournament was a great preparation for Andover's toughest skein of matches this week: Deerfield, Roxbury Latin and Milton. On Wednesday afternoon at home, Andover beat a highly regarded Deerfield team, 4-3, winning the doubles point by virtue of strong performances and first and second from the top four, Meyer, Jebsen, Chan and Zou. Trey played impeccably against creative shotmaker Andrew Siderides at number one, winning 6-1, 6-3. Foster Jebsen having finished first of all with a 6-3, 6-1 win over serve-and-volleyer Matt Buckley. All Andover then needed was one more match, but it didn't come from Tony at number four, whose opponent Franco Nilo proved too steady, winning 6-3, 6-2. And Chris Kim at six lost to young George Wheatley, 6-2, 6-3 and Jin Won Lee lost to Kyle Wieczorek 6-2, 6-2. That left it up, once again, to Andrew Chan at number three, and he had another nail-biter on his hands with retriever par excellance Andrew Cherna. In a gritty show of determined, aggressive play, Chan pulled out a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win, clinching the team victory.

The last day of April had the JV tennis team up at Exeter for the first of 2 spring term meetings. Unfortunately, PA came out on the short end, sufferring a 7-2 loss. This was a competitive contest, and if the Blue can paly more aggressively in the re-match, they may be able to upend the Red. The good news had Fred Grace at # 1 position snatching victory requiring a super tiebreaker to offset a first set loss at 2-6, and a second set victory at 6-4, with a 13-11 tiebreaker victory. Congrats to Fred in his first win of the season. PA's second win was by their very good # 1 doubles team of Chung & Kim at 8-6 in a pro set with "ad" scoring. Exeter won the remaining match-ups: 4-6,5-7; 5-7, 4-6; 1-6, 3-6; 3-6, 2-6; (doubles) 5-8; (doubles) 4-8. No ice cream on this cold afternoon in New Hampshire!

RF/C Sarah Onorato ’11 and CF Nicole Duddy ’08 led the way offensively, as P Michelle Hollebeke ’08 (4-1) held Exeter at bay en route to a 9-1 win in New Hampshire. Onorato’s three RBI and Duddy’s walk, bunt single, base hit and three stolen bases supported Hollebeke’s six-strikeout pitching. The Red nicked Hollebeke for seven hits, including three by CF Katelin Wahl but with the exception of the home fifth, those safeties were scattered. Hollebeke sat in the driver’s seat from the start, as the Blue jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead, added another run in the second, two more in the third and three in the fifth inning. Andover’s runs were driven in by 3B Shannon McSweeney ’11, SS Sarah Boylan ’09, Hollebeke, C Stephanie Clegg ’08 and LF Riley Gardner ’10. 2B Alayna Garbarino ’10 chipped in with a single, walk and stolen base in her best offensive showing of the season. 3B Brianna McCarthy ‘09 and RF Caroline Kaufman ’10 came off the bench to contribute defensively and the Blue snuffed out Exeter’s one rally in the fifth with a 1-6-3 double play. Hosting Governor's, Andover was on the short end of a 7-12 score. Although the big blue had a great start and held a 5-1 advantage early in the game, the Gov's came roaring back to take a 6-5 lead at the half. In the second half neither team could get untracked offensively until midway through the half. Andover notched the first goal of the second half at the 12:25 mark to tie the game at 6-6. With under 9 minutes to play, Governor's responded with two goals of their own to take an 8-6 advantage. The big blue answered with 7:30 to go to pull within one, but that was as close as the girls would get. Governor's closed out the scoring with 4 straight goals. Andover put forth a strong effort but a few too many turnovers in transition and solid play by a fast, balanced Governor's team did the big blue in today. Defensively, the big blue played well all afternoon, doubling effectively and communicating well and Kaitlin Gaiss made several great saves. Andover will host Tabor on Saturday afternoon. |

The Big Blue faced a formidable foe in St. John's Prep on a game that had been rescheduled from an earlier rain-out. Coach Brother Bob has moved onto greener pastures after decades at the helm of their 9th grade team, but they still had 81 kids tryout for their squad and 30 players suited up.
We could have used a saint on our side; to modify Shakespeare, the quality of mercy was certainly strained out on the diamond today. The breaks didn't go our way in a game that was much closer than the score. In four innings, we reached third base with two outs but were unable to put runners across. We stranded nine runners total and were caught off base three times. In contrast, St. John's scored six runs on our three fielding errors.
Andover highlights included six sharp innings on the hill by Chris Massie who struck out two and gave up six earned runs. At the plate, Vince D'Andrea poked two singles and had a stolen base; he also threw a perfect strike from leftfield to the plate in the third. Matt Renner lined a single to right in the third before scoring Andover's lone run. Zach Fine also swiped a base in the seventh. Billy Fowkes took the hill for the last inning and gave up a walk and a hit before preventing the Saints from marching in.

The Blue varsity travelled to the McDonogh School in Owings Mills, MD on Friday, April 25th for a weekend tournament called the New England-MidAtlantic Invitational, one of sixteen teams, including Beacon of NYC, Blair, Lawrenceville, and Peddie of NJ, Brunswick and The Gunnery of CT, Mercersburg, Germantown, Hill and Episcopal of PA, The University School of Ohio, and Landon and St. Paul's of MD. Since the Flint Hill School of Virginia didn't show, there was a bye in the first round for number-one seeds, and Trey Meyer of Andover earned that distinction at number one by virtue of his 140 USA ranking and his NEPSITT victory over Robby Sorrel of Brunswick, the other nationally reputed player in the draw. A dark horse was Milo Hauk, a Slovakian from the Beacon School with a ranking of 7 in the Eastern section. Trey was beaten in the second round by a red-hot serve-and-volleyer, Zak Kelm from University, but went on to dominate his next three opponents, Jared Teichman of Germantown Friends, Chris Rosensteel of Peddie, and Todd Harrity of Episcopal, who is, incidentally, the top squash player in the country. Andrew Chan was seeded number three in number three singles, and held on through two rounds. Andover came in ninth out of sixteen teams and earned lots of respect for their tough play and great sportsmanship.

In the second half it was tied at 8-8 for a while, but a beautiful CC goal with about two minutes left was too much for the Blue to overcome. Goalies Peyton Wilson and Gauri Thaker split time between the pipes; each made clutch saves to keep the game close. Carolyn Harmeling led the Big Blue with three goals and an assist, Brenna Liponis also had three goals, and Sophie Gould notched two. Playing well in the midfield were Emily Timm, Mandi Thran, and Ijeoma Ejiogu. The Deuce will play CC again on May 8th; the two teams are well-matched and it should be another exciting game!

In this year’s edition of the Andover’s April Four-Team Doubleheader Day when the Blue host Cushing, Phillips Exeter and Tabor academies, Andover defeated Cushing, 8-2, before losing to Tabor, 14-6. Meanwhile Exeter dropped two tight games to the same opponents by 7-6 and 5-4 scores. Offensively, PA more than held its own, tallying fourteen runs on eighteen hits, but the Blue found its pitching, already complicated by the gradual return of ace Michelle Hollebeke ’08 to the circle, stretched too thinly to hold the Seawolves at bay in the nightcap. Playing three games in two days was good preparation for the upcoming Big East Invitational Tournament, but it identified areas that will need to be shored up before that competition three weeks from now.
Coming off a curtailed, sixty-pitch outing the day before, Hollebeke (3-1) went five innings in a seventy-six pitch outing to get the win over the Penguins. While the rust from her sixteen-day layoff was still evident, Hollebeke limited Cushing to three hits and two runs, one of them earned. She struck out six and walked three. The Penguins’ shortstop, Kristina Brown truly earned two of those free passes, extending Hollebeke in those plate appearances through a total of twenty pitches. Sarah Boylan ’09 hurled the last two innings, retiring six straight batters after the first she faced singled. For PA, RF Sarah Onorato ’11 continued her torrid hitting, going 4-fo-4 and driving in two runs. Other RBI were registered by Boylan, Hollebeke (2) and C Stephanie Clegg ’08. CF Nicole Duddy ’08 was a defensive force, making four putouts in this game, and three more, plus an assist, in the day’s second contest. When Boylan relieved Hollebeke, Brianna McCarthy ’09 came in to play third base and promptly rang up one putout and three assists in the last two innings.

Charles Oliva played a very tough and determined match at the # 2 position and won both sets at 7-6 (tiebreaker) & 6-4; John Ingram at #4 won his 2 sets, also in a tough match 6-3 and 7-6 (tiebreaker). Steve Kim & David Chung, # 1 doubles, held on 7-5 and 7-6, whereas Chris Kent & Mike Scogs teamed up to take the deciding doubles match at 7-6. Two set losses, suffered by Connor McAuliffe and Mike Scogs, accounted for the 4 Governor's points. Andover traveled to Northfield today for a rematch against NMH. Though the result was the same as in the first meeting, Andover was a more competitive team this time. NMH wins 3-1 (31-29, 29-31, 30-22, 30-24).
In game 1 the game was tied 8 times and actually had Andover ahead 29-27, but lost to NMH's captain serving 4 straight points. In game 2 NMH went ahead 5-0, but Andover managed a comeback to get a lead at 13-11. As impressive as the PA offense was in the first game of the twin bill, the Big Blue bats thundered even louder in the second game, racking up 20 runs on 26 hits, including 3 doubles, 7 triples, and 3 home runs. J.R. Santaniello led off the game with a homer and later added a triple before the 7-run first inning was over. NMH came right back and pounded out 3 hits and 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the first, but PA was relentless on this day, adding 5 more runs in the second and scoring every inning until the seventh. Ryan McCarthy, one of the home run hitters, had 5 hits in the game, as did Geoff Lynch, who also caught both ends of the doubleheader. Bobby Farnham had 4 hits and 3 RBI’s, Mike Ciummei banged out 3 hits—two for extra bases—and Jack Walsh had 3 hits including a 3-run home run. Lucian Neville got the start on the mound for PA, and the senior right-hander pitched 5 innings, allowing 6 runs—4 earned—on 6 hits while striking out 3 to earn the win.
