8. Addison Gallery of American Art

The Addison Gallery of American Art is a nationally recognized museum with a distinguished permanent collection and more than a dozen exhibitions each year open to the public and to Andover students. The museum staff also works with Andover's faculty to create special programs that dovetail with course work. The museum was given to the school by Thomas Cochran, class of 1890, who helped rebuild Phillips Academy in the 1920s.

Q: What is the Gallery's most famous painting?

A: Winslow Homer's "Eight Bells," 1886, is probably the Addison's most well-known painting. The gallery also has works by John Singleton Copley, Benjamin West, Thomas Eakins, James A. McNeill Whistler, George Bellows, Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella (PA Class of 1954) and Andrew Wyeth.
