from the Director |

Thomas
Cochran created the Addison in 1931 to invest in the boys of
Phillips Academy what he called
“a love of the beautiful.” Among its first holdings were
iconic paintings by Winslow Homer, Thomas Eakins, James
McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and John Singleton
Copley. While Cochran preferred the paintings of “Old
Masters,” his vision of what defined American art embraced all
media, from silver and furniture to models of famous ships.
Over the years, as artists such as George Bellows, Edward
Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, Jackson Pollock,
Jasper Johns, Frank Stella, Louise Nevelson, Alex Katz, and
others grew in fame, some of their best work entered the
Addison. Today our collection has grown to nearly 15,000
objects, including one of the great collections of photography
in the country.

Curator's
Choice: Jasper Johns |
|
|
In
the 1950s and 60s, Jasper Johns incorporated familiar,
commonplace images into his paintings— flags, numbers,
letters, and targets. He and other artists such as Robert
Rauschenberg and Andy Warhol, who introduced found objects and
imagery drawn from commercial and popular culture into their
art, were the founders of the 1960s movement known as Pop Art.
Unlike the earlier generation of Abstract Expressionists, who
celebrated personal expression through abstract statements of
color, form, and design, Pop artists focused on issues of
perception through depictions of commonplace objects in
painterly style.

Lane |

William
and Saundra
Lane's relationship with the
Addison began in 1953 when New York art dealer Edith
Halpert introduced them to Addison Director Bartlett Hayes.
Residents of nearby Lunenburg, the Lanes had begun a
noteworthy collection of American 20th century paintings that
eventually included a wide range of works by artists such as
Arthur Dove, Georgia O'Keeffe and Stuart Davis. In 1958, the
Lanes made the first of several significant donations to the
Addison collection – the
prized Patrick Henry Bruce, Peinture/Nature Morte.

Artist's
Project: Type A |
|
|
The
collaborative team of Adam Ames and Andrew Bordwin, also known
as Type A, creates work that addresses both the seriousness
and absurdity of aggressive male competition. In video and
photography, the artists/actors cast themselves in works that
parody a variety of male rituals and competitive pursuits,
simultaneously pointing out the humorous as well as serious
and even disturbing aspects of male competition.
