The collaborative team of Adam Ames and Andrew Bordwin, also known as Type A, creates work that addresses both the seriousness and absurdity of aggressive male competition. In video and photography, the artists/actors cast themselves in works that parody a variety of male rituals and competitive pursuits, simultaneously pointing out the humorous as well as serious and even disturbing aspects of male competition.

As 2005-06 Edward E. Elson artists-in-residence, Type A created a series of videos and photographs that built on their interests in athleticism, competition, and collaboration.

Instead of featuring themselves, the artists used male and female Phillips Academy athletes as their subjects. In Cheer, the duo examines the dynamics of team spirit and the power of teamwork with the help of PA spirit teams SLAM and Blue Key Society, while Jinx examines the superstitious and ritualistic behaviors athletes often employ in an attempt to conjure the desired outcome.

Cheer and Jinx are on display through July 31.
