In Focus: 75 Years of
Collecting American
Photography
In 1934, when the Addison Gallery purchased a photograph by Margaret Bourke-White, it became one of only a handful of museums in the country to seriously collect photography. Seventy-five years in the making and consisting of more than 6,000 images dating from the 19th to 21st centuries, this collection represents one of the major repositories of American photography.
To celebrate and share the wealth of the museum's formidable photography collection, the Addison plans a comprehensive exhibition. Through individual masterworks and portfolios, the exhibition will emphasize the ways in which individual images and groups of images speak to each other formally, historically, and thematically.
