collection is not thematic. Rather, it intends to acquaint visitors with the depth and breadth of the Addison's holdings of paintings by artists ranging from Benjamin West to Edward Hopper. Landscapes, cityscapes, still lifes, and portraits engage each other across a span of two hundred years in conversation about the richness and complexity of American art. Together they also show the Addison's prominent place as custodian of our  nation's amazing cultural wealth.

This exhibition has been generously funded by the Bernard and Louise Palitz Exhibitions Fund.
