Art and Craft acknowledges the integral relationship between hand and mind, necessity and idea, maker and product that is embodied in the decorative arts. Finding artistic expression/articulation within the parameters of the useful, makers can transform the useful object into a transcending manifestation of design.
Art and Craft allows the Addison to share a little-recognized part of the museum's permanent collection with our audiences. Treasures of American art and craft will be installed in conversation with a selection of great paintings and sculptures also owned by the Addison .
This exhibition was generously supported by the Sidney R. Knafel Exhibition Fund.
