Exhibitions:
Season of the Child |
|
|
During the 19th
century, itinerant portrait painters, also known as limners,
traveled throughout the northeastern United
States in search of
commissions. Children were the most frequent subjects with
parents commissioning the artists to paint a record of the
family’s hope for the future or memorialize a child who had
died. With little formal training, the artists had a set of
templates for poses and backgrounds and their modest skills
made faces often seem more generic than individual. Children
were sometimes depicted with a favorite toy or pet. Boys were
often equipped with whips and tools and girls posed with dolls
and flowers. |

Oscar sees unique beauty. Through his lens, he captures these
subtle, often overlooked details of life and brings to them a
profound appreciation.

other times it was a moral lesson, identifying particular
virtues, establishing myths and types, and playing out hopes
and dreams for the American experience.
