Education and Outreach:
Photography and Writing Program
The Photography and Writing Program is designed to enable and inspire students to express themselves in words and photographs. Through the program, the Education Department coordinates collaborative, creative projects with teachers at schools and organizations. The projects – each uniquely based on the aspirations of the teacher and students – can last for several weeks or up to an entire school year.

Developing a Photography and Writing Project
Projects usually begin with a theme relating the art at the Addison to a specific subject, need, or interest of a teacher and progress with a combination of museum visits, classroom work, interactions with artists, student picture-making and writing, and the presentation of student work through public exhibitions and/or publications. Projects are coordinated between Addison Education Staff, teachers, curriculum specialists, and occasionally, Addison artists-in-residence. Organizations such as the Andover/Lawrence Bread Loaf Writing Program may also be involved.

If you are interested in developing a Photography & Writing Project for your own students, learn more about the Addison’s program by downloading and reading the Addison Photography and Writing Guide (coming soon) or by contacting us!

History of the Program
The idea of using students’ own photographs to inspire autobiographical, descriptive, expository, and community-based writing originates in the work of contemporary photographer Wendy Ewald whose creative involvement with children produced the initial spark for the Addison's Photography & Writing Program. The Photography and Writing Program responds to the mandates of the Massachusetts Department of Education while also matching those of the Lawrence Public School system with its emphasis on learning standards in language arts in this predominantly bilingual community. The interdisciplinary nature of the photography projects also offers creative and exciting ways to match curriculum frameworks for all K-12 schools in other areas such as art, math, local history, science, and literature and language arts.
