Studio art class at Addison Gallery
c. 1940 |
Intended by museum founder Thomas Cochran (PA 1890) “to enrich permanently the lives of students at Phillips Academy,” the Addison Gallery consistently strives to promote innovative methods of interdisciplinary learning and integrate art into Phillips Academy students‘ experiences. The Addison works closely with Phillips Academy faculty in all disciplines to plan class visits that complement course curriculum through exhibitions, objects in the permanent collection, and the Elson Artist-in-Residence program. The Education Staff also works closely with individual students as well as student clubs and organizations—such as the Office of Community and Multicultural Development (CAMD) and the Community Service Program—to plan special programs and events that bring art into the lives of members of the Phillips Academy and public community. |

Classes
During the academic year, the Addison shares its resources with Phillips Academy students in a variety of ways, helping faculty to complement material in such courses as African American Literature, U.S. History, Visual Studies, Sports Psychology, Biology, Popular Culture, Art History, and many others. |

Elson Artist-in-Residence Program
Students from both Phillips Academy and schools in the surrounding area have the opportunity to interact directly with the Addison’s artists-in-residence. Artists teach in the museum, classroom, and in the studio, and also engage students as subjects in their artwork. Former artists-in-residence have included photographers William Wegman, Wendy Ewald (PA 1969), Dawoud Bey, Robert Frank, sculptors such as Robert Hudson and Richard Shaw, and painters such as Kerry James Marshall. This program was endowed by Edward E. Elson (PA 1952) in 1982. |

Events
Phillips Academy and the public community partake in events coordinated by the Addison and the school throughout the year. |
 |
| In November of 2006, three Phillips Academy seniors and one alumna spoke on a panel with photographer and former artist-in-residence Wendy Ewald and faculty members before a public audience. The panel discussion concerned the provocative exhibition, Wendy Ewald: American Alphabets which involved former students as subjects and raised questions about language and personal and group identities. |
