Education and Outreach: Pre-K-12 School Groups |
 |
| The goal of the Addison Gallery of American Art’s Education Program is to help educators develop and implement ways to use the museum’s artistic and cultural resources to enhance and support the education of students in public and independent schools. The Education Program is designed to support the Massachusetts Department of Education’s Curriculum Frameworks. |

School Visits to the Addison
The Addison offers free inquiry-based tours for pre-K through high school-level classes which are designed to integrate art and critical thinking into all curriculum areas, especially language arts, history, social studies, science, and math. Through conversations and meetings with teachers, we organize one-time and multi-visit programs as well as pre- and post-visit activities designed to reinforce connections between the museum and classroom. Tours, led by Education Staff, are student-centered and discussion-oriented and are tailored according to the specific interests and needs of each group based on age/grade, classroom subject, and curriculum. |

Curriculum Packets
Curriculum Packets, teachers’ guides to current exhibitions, are designed to help K-12 educators make connections between art, critical thinking, and various curricula. Including exhibition information, images, discussion questions, art and writing activities, and related resources, Curriculum Packets are available here, by request, and at our seasonal Educators’ Evenings. |

Arranging a School Visit to the Addison
How to schedule a visit
- Explore the exhibitions by reading the Curriculum Packet, visiting the galleries, and/or talking with Education Department Staff to determine which exhibition(s) is/are most relevant for your class or group.
- Select several possible dates and times to bring your class to the gallery. We can accommodate up to 55 students (or 2 separate classes) at a time, Tuesday-Friday, 10AM-4PM. Tours of one or more of the current exhibitions range from 45-90 minutes and may include a related art or writing activity coordinated by the teacher and Education Staff.
- At least two weeks in advance, and preferably more, contact Amy Freedberg at (978) 749-4037 or afreedberg@andover.edu to schedule the visit and discuss ideas for guided tours and related activities that are particularly suited to your group.

How to prepare your class for a visit to the Addison
- Discuss the visit with your class before you come. The Curriculum Packet and a pre-visit to the museum can help you inform students about what they will see and do on their trip.
- Additional information about the artists and exhibitions is always available on request.
- In-class visits (usually including slide presentation and discussion) can sometimes be arranged.
- Mention that students will need to keep in mind: stay with the group, raise hands to ask or answer questions, no touching the artwork or the walls, no running, no food or gum, no backpacks or large bags, pencils only.

What to expect when you are at the museum
- When you come in the front door of the gallery, we will greet you and direct students where to hang their coats and gather.
- After a brief introduction in the lobby, we will bring your students through the exhibition(s) of your choice. Students will be asked to discuss, interact with, and raise questions about the artwork that they see. We strongly encourage teachers to engage in the discussion to strengthen the connection between classroom and museum learning.
- If arranged in advance, the visit can conclude with an art-making or writing activity. We can provide pencils, paper, clipboards, and art-making materials.

Making the most of your visit
- Pre- and post-visit activities are the best way to get the most out of your museum visit.
- Project and discussion ideas provided in the Art and Writing Activities section of the Curriculum Packet will help you determine the best approach for the age level and subject of your class. (If the packet does not include information relevant to your class, we can help you make connections.)
- We are pleased to assist you in developing and executing extended projects that connect the classroom and the museum.
