Biography
Nari Ward emigrated from Jamaica to the United States at the age of twelve and eventually settled in Harlem, where he now lives and works. He received a BA from Hunter College/City University in 1991 and an MFA from Brooklyn College/City University in 1992, and now teaches at the former. Ward's inspiration has often come from his neighbors and neighborhood and from his father's favorite church hymns.
Ward has had participated in exhibitions, performances, and artist residences throughout the United States and Europe, including the Whitney and Venice Biennials and commissions for the United Nations and the World Health Organization. His collaborators include choreographer Bill T. Jones and writer Toni Morrison as well as visual artists and community members. He has received prestigious grants from the National Foundation for the Arts and from the Guggenheim and Pollock Krasner Foundations.
