Biography
Growing up in a California suburb has informed Andrea Zittel's work and its continual investigation into the American dream. Upon graduating from San Diego State University with a BFA in painting and sculpture in 1988, she came to the Northeast to study at the Rhode Island School of Design. After receiving a MFA in sculpture from RISD in 1990, Zittel settled in New York City. While Zittel maintains a home and studio in New York, her latest experiment in living has been the development of a desert home, studio, and artist community in Joshua Tree National Park in southern California.
Andrea Zittel has been featured in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions
throughout the United States and Europe, including a solo exhibition
at The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her indoor
work has been featured in the Biennial exhibitions at the Whitney
Museum of American Art, New York (1995) and in Venice (1993). Zittel's
outdoor work has been exhibited in the international public art
exhibition Sculpture Projects in Münster (Germany) in 1997 and in
Central Park, New York City. A history of Zittel's projects as well
as current projects in process can be viewed at her web site: www.zittel.org.
