The Campaign Objectives

The Addison Gallery serves as a unique supplement to the educational mission of Phillips Academy and as its stellar representative to both the Andover community and the world at large. We are entrusted with the responsibility to be absolutely certain that its future will continue to adhere to the Academy's tradition of excellence.

Create the Addison Gallery Museum Learning Center

The learning center will be the museum’s creative hub for curriculum development and will enhance dramatically our outreach to the Academy and to the public by providing access to one of the world’s greatest American art collections. Our new learning center will significantly improve the way we engage audiences by making available the full range of the Addison’s exemplary collection in an intimate and customizable setting. This space will accommodate Phillips Academy, regional schools, individual scholars, the public, and a variety of classes. It will house an arts library, and provide computer spaces for online learning. By introducing new, versatile ways to study art, the center will become one of the most intellectually stimulating and versatile museum spaces.

Provide appropriate collection storage and art preservation space

Due to space constraints, the Addison’s renowned collection is increasingly stored offsite and is inaccessible except with substantial effort. Our addition allows us to house all objects in the museum, offering 100 percent accessibility with ample space for growth in the collection. The new construction also will allow the Addison to address all “back of house” needs in accordance with the finest museum practices, including greatly improved exhibition preparation facilities, a loading dock for art deliveries, and matting and framing space for our collection and loaned exhibitions.

Construct new office space

The Addison was designed in 1931 to house 3 employees. In the ensuing 75 years, the staff has expanded as the museum’s ambitions have grown and the expectations of the Academy and the public have increased. The result has been the conversion of gallery and storage spaces to overcrowded offices. The expansion would allow us to restore these museum galleries to their former elegance while providing appropriate office space for the future.

Renovate and restore the existing Platt building

The Addison’s building, a prominent landmark on the Academy's historic campus, is an architectural treasure. Programmatic stresses on the facility and the need to protect its future require us to update critical systems, address deferred maintenance, restore co-opted spaces, and sensitively retrofit our unique space. As part of the renovation, we will upgrade climate control and emergency power generation systems, wiring, lighting and technology capabilities, and install the most advanced security systems.

Ensure the Addison’s future financial stability

Our ambitious project will establish the infrastructure necessary to enhance the quality and range of all exhibitions, events, programs, and scholarship opportunities. Providing additional endowment funds to support increased expenses and programmatic growth is critical to sustaining our endeavors. We will ensure the viability and vitality of the new Addison by endowing key staff positions:

Contemporary Art and Photography Curator
Director of Education
Educational Outreach Coordinator
Web Editor

The Addison is fortunate to have a dedicated group of generous friends advocating for this essential and long overdue project. Two extraordinary philanthropists have made lead contributions to the effort, totaling $14 million. We are also pleased to announce that other benefactors have made generous commitments as well, pushing us over $20 million. As we reach for our goal of $30 million, we turn to those who understand the importance of this project and who share our vision to advance the Addison as a leader in American art scholarship and in learning through looking at the best in American art.

The Addison Gallery continues to be a haven of reflection and beauty for students at Phillips Academy. The building itself, as well as the works therein, infatuate young minds with a magnificence that they seek to instill in their own lives.
