Changing scenery

Members of the Andover community, as well as commuters along Route 28, have noticed a change in the skyline lately. But don’t worry: The transformation is only temporary. After more than eight decades, the Memorial Bell Tower and its venerable carillon have been razed as part of a meticulous reconstruction project. Dedicated in 1922 as a memorial to alumni who died in World War I, Andover’s central landmark was failing as a result of original construction flaws, and full restoration was needed. The academy is now in the midst of reconstructing the building from the ground up. Completion is expected in winter 2006.
